Life & Work with Jasmine Derck of Indiana

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Derck.

Jasmine, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always had a passion for taking photos. My mom was a photographer in college, so we always had cameras around the house growing up. By the time I reached middle school, I never went anywhere without my little Canon digital camera. When I was a junior in high school, I decided to buy my first real camera. I started having people ask me to do their senior photos, then family photos, and even weddings! After high school I attended the University of Saint Francis where I majored in graphic design and minored in photography. After learning so much about lighting and portraits my senior year, I dove right into working with people. Soon I was shooting 20-30 weddings a year on top of families, couples, seniors, and anything else people wanted to hire me for. Since then I’ve gotten married and become a mom to 2 kids. Since family time means so much to me, I’ve slowed down my business to really focus on what I love the most – which is love and families. Now I only shoot about 15 weddings a year, and work exclusively with couples, newborns, and families.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Art is always a struggle. It can be hard to not play the comparison game, or hear that somebody has gone in a different direction. However art is always changing. I think the best way to move forward when in a rut is to get creative and remember to make time to create for yourself too, and not just for clients.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a wedding and lifestyle photographer. I love working with couples and then seeing their lives grow through the years. I love when people come back to me year after year, and it makes me feel so proud to always be trusted with documenting their lives. I am a photographer who cares deeply for my clients, and truly works as hard as I can to not just deliver beautiful photos, but to make the experience as wonderful and memorable as I can.
