Daily Inspiration: Meet Ryan Walsh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Walsh.

Hi Ryan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
A defining moment in Elk Rapids history occurred in 2025, when the future of the building was placed at risk. Although I officially joined HERTHA in February 2026, I had closely followed the public discussions surrounding the Township’s decision to sell the property. At the time, I was transitioning out of a similar situation in another community, where concerns over transparency in property transfers had become a significant issue. That experience gave me a clear understanding of what was at stake in Elk Rapids. Watching HERTHA successfully advocate for public ownership and ultimately secure the building was a pivotal moment that deepened my respect for the organization and solidified my interest in becoming part of its future.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Stepping into this role came with a genuinely steep learning curve. I quickly realized that to properly represent the Hall to our community and renters, I needed to completely immerse myself in the deep history and unique architectural quirks of a 142-year-old building.

Operationally, our existing systems needed an update to match the modern demands of property management. By auditing our daily operations, we were able to reshape our workflows and modernize past practices. These adjustments have been vital to streamlining our rental services, helping ensure the booking and execution process is as smooth, professional, and efficient as possible for our customers.

Of course, managing the physical space is only part of the equation. Since we are now fully responsible for our own deferred maintenance and mortgage, a major focus has been supporting the critical HERTHA Capital Campaign. Balancing day-to-day event execution with non-profit fundraising is a collective juggling act, but seeing the community rally to invest in the Hall’s structural future is incredibly rewarding and keeps us all moving forward.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
If I had to say what I’m known for, it would be a mix of being highly organized and deeply invested in local history and civic transparency. I think what sets me apart is how I view community assets. Before coming to HERTHA, I saw firsthand what happens in other towns when local officials try to push through property transfers under the radar. That experience taught me how incredibly important it is to keep public spaces in public hands. Because of that, I approach my job not just as someone booking events, but as someone who is actively helping to protect a piece of our local identity.

Right now, I am most proud of the role I get to play in HERTH’s new chapter. When the community rallied to buy the building in 2025 to save it from being sold off privately, it was a massive victory. But it also meant the organization took on a significant mortgage and a long list of needed repairs. Since I stepped into this role in early 2026, I’ve been really proud of helping us strike the right balance for bringing in the private rental income we need to keep the lights on, while making sure the doors stay open and accessible to the people of Elk Rapids.

How do you define success?
I define success as being a dedicated steward of both the rich history of the Elk Rapids Township Hall and its future as a vibrant, community-centered venue. It’s about ensuring the building’s stories and memories live on while providing a welcoming, modern space for new generations to create their own.
