Life & Work with Lucas West of New York

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucas West.

Hi Lucas, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When I was six years old, my mother put me in classical piano lessons. By the age of ten, I had added jazz piano, and classical/jazz trombone. Then in the 7th grade, after seeing my sister Clara in a theatre production, I decided I wanted to start singing! Ever since then my love for music has grown exponentially, and now I am lucky enough to call it my life! Over the years I have absorbed countless genres and artists from jazz, to classical, to funk, to pop, etc. I feel that every artist, genre and style have something to offer me, and I just can’t get enough!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. Along with being and becoming a creative mind, comes the battles of being a creative mind. Over the past few years I have started to struggle with anxiety, especially during my time on “The Voice”. I am quite open about my struggles, as I am now in a beautiful place with them! Through my support system including my parents, sister, mentor and girlfriend, I am surrounded by beautiful people who always see the best in me, and check me when it matters most. As of a month ago, I have graduated college and have officially started myself on my own independent path. At first, a wave of fear came over me… as well as a wave of expectation to do something just as cool as “The Voice”. However therein lies the mission. It’s about the journey, not the destination. As long as I keep my loved ones and music within my heart, I will overcome everything I’ll need to overcome. Because I am not alone! 🙂

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
While nationally most people know me for my time on Season 29 of “The Voice”, I am a Western New Yorker through and through! For now, I still reside in Rochester NY, until it’s time to move! I have my eyes on New York and Los Angeles. I also went to college in Fredonia NY, so I spend a lot of my time in Buffalo as well. I have performed our National Anthem at a couple of Buffalo Bills games!

Artistically, I want to be the next true pianist-singer. I want to bring back what it truly means to be a “Piano Man”, however through the lens of a more modernized sound. I’ve also never felt tied to specifically one genre, it feels too polarizing to me. Good writing is good writing, and I want my music to reflect that. I just recently released my debut single “But I’m Alone”. It’s a power ballad, similar to the style of The Eagles or Coldplay!

The bottom line is that I want to be a true entertainer. Like Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Elton John, John Legend! I want to give people a sense of love and musical atmosphere that they will never forget.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I took a gap semester to be on “The Voice”, right after I made Team Legend. It wasn’t exactly a logical decision, however after making it to the Finale, I sure am glad I took the gap! In the moment, I was worried. Just because I had made a team didn’t mean I’d make it any further. I took a leap of faith, and placed confidence within myself and my music, and look how it paid off! Without risk, there is no reward. As artists within an ultra competitive industry, it is so imperative that we take risks whether that be creatively, or in a career sense.
