Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Alexander.
Hi Diana, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
At age 10, I wrote my first play and had my elementary school friends perform. From there I’d create comic books in high school with stories that had all the students and teachers wondering what would happen next, begging for the next book. Later, I began a career in Hollywood as a Development Executive, helping independent filmmakers package, develop, and pitch their screenplays. That experience gave me a deep understanding of both the creative and business sides of filmmaking. My first real gig was on Hill Harper’s debut short film, The Truth, where I served as Second Assistant Director. Today, I’m a writer, producer, and director, as well as the founder of Diana Alexander Studios. I’ve been dubbed the “Tubi Thriller Specialist,” earned three Telly Awards, and have written and produced multiple films currently streaming on major platforms. I also serve as Co-Director of Distribution for Her Patio Productions, an all-female production company based in Detroit, hoping to share the knowledge and empower a new wave of talented female creators with the skills and wisdom to continue to tell their own stories
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Early in my career, I spent years helping other filmmakers develop and strengthen their projects while trying to build a path for my own. I invested a significant amount of my own money creating trailers, sizzle reels, and pitch materials, only to have studios hold onto my ideas for years without ever moving them forward.
Looking back, those experiences taught me resilience, but they also showed me the limitations of relying on traditional gatekeepers. That’s one of the reasons I’m so excited about today’s landscape. Streaming platforms and new technology have completely changed what’s possible for independent filmmakers.
Instead of waiting for someone else to say yes, I came back home, started creating my own films, and built my career by betting on myself. That decision gave me the freedom to tell the stories I wanted to tell and put them directly in front of audiences without waiting for permission. Soon, I’d win 3 Telly Awards for Legacy: From Horns to House as Executive Producer.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a writer, producer, and director who specializes in crafting thrillers with heart. I often say I write about beautiful Black faces in beautiful spaces dealing with some ugly situations. My stories aren’t built around stereotypes or spectacle—they’re built around people. Whether I’m writing a thriller, drama, or love story, I create honest, emotionally layered characters whose experiences are deeply human and resonate across cultures.
I also believe writing for streaming platforms is its own craft. The audience watches differently today, and I love the challenge of building stories that are emotionally rich while keeping viewers engaged from beginning to end.
What I’m most proud of isn’t just the projects I’ve created—it’s the people God has placed in my path and the wisdom they’ve entrusted to me.
One of the most defining moments in my journey was connecting with John Singleton. He told me something I’ve carried with me ever since: not everyone will understand your vision—but do it anyway. That simple advice gave me permission to stop chasing approval and start trusting my calling.
Meeting Tracy Morgan reminded me that resilience has no expiration date. No matter your age or the obstacles you’ve faced, the ability to keep getting back up is one of the greatest measures of success.
I also had the privilege of helping Nicole Murphy develop her production company, Nicole Murphy Collective. She spoke candidly about what it’s like to have a front-row seat to Hollywood at the highest level. One lesson she shared has stayed with me: vision may open the door, but it’s boldness, authenticity, and unwavering honesty that sustain a lasting career.
Those moments weren’t just opportunities—they were confirmations. Each one strengthened my faith, sharpened my purpose, and reminded me that success isn’t only about where you end up. It’s about who you become along the way.
The project I’m most proud of currently is my upcoming thriller-drama, *Captive*, premiering exclusively on Tubi in September 2026. Starring Ciera Angelia, Neil Carr, and Bella Chadwick, it’s a film packed with twists, emotional depth, and unforgettable performances. I can’t wait for audiences to experience the ride.
What sets me apart is that I every project I create is driven by the belief that entertainment and purpose can exist in the same story. I want audiences to be thrilled, to laugh, to cry, and to leave feeling like they’ve experienced a transformational journey. If I can entertain people while helping them see themselves—or someone else—a little differently, then I’ve done my job.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is purpose. Success is wonderful, awards are appreciated, and accomplishments are meaningful—but none of them matter if the work doesn’t mean something.
I believe every gift we’re given is meant to serve someone else. For me, storytelling is more than entertainment; it’s an opportunity to inspire hope, challenge perspectives, and remind people that their lives, their dreams, and their stories have value. If someone watches one of my films and walks away believing they can overcome something, forgive someone, or finally take a chance on themselves, then I’ve succeeded.
I also believe in betting on yourself. There were seasons when I waited for permission, for someone to open a door or validate my work. Eventually, I realized that sometimes faith means building the door yourself. That’s the mindset that changed my life, and it’s the advice I hope every creative hears. Don’t wait for the perfect opportunity. Keep learning, keep creating, and keep showing up. Your greatest breakthrough may come the moment you decide to believe in yourself before anyone else does.
At the end of the day, I want my legacy to be bigger than the films I’ve made. I want it to be the people who found the courage to chase their own dreams because they saw someone else do it first.
