Today we’d like to introduce you to Jovan Martin.
Hi Jovan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I like to say I fell in love in this order: filmmaking, music, basketball, and finally writing. As a kid one of the first creative things I remember trying to do was make a “movie.” I loved cameras. I’d make my whole family get involved in my goofy plans for movies, it created the best memories. As I got older I’d force my friends to make YouTube videos whenever we hung out hahaahahaha… it’s funny to reflect on that aspect of my creativity because that’s one of my favorite things to do to this day. Getting the homies together to shoot any video brings me right back to being a kid directing my dad with a nerf sword in his hand. My Dad and I love movies and that’s a big part of this for me.
Music is all my mother. My mother played piano, guitar, and had the most beautiful voice I had ever heard. As a boy I sat in awe as my mother would mess around with her black and purple guitar. I’d stare at the ceiling and hear her paint melodies all throughout our busted up apartments. The rapping started with her too. We used to record ourselves on the webcam doing covers of any songs we could find. I’d take the rap verses and she’d have the hook. It was fun for the both of us, but for me it was where the love began. I started writing at 12 and never really stopped. It was fueled by a lot of different things and it was really infrequent but the main focus was always love. I love music. I love how it makes me feel. It truly is magic, and I’ve been obsessed since I was a little boy making webcam covers with his momma.
I’ll finish with basketball before this gets too long because it’s still important. Basketball taught me a lot of things. This is also where a lot of my father’s lessons come into play for me. Hooping taught me how to compete, improve, and communicate. I take a lot of the mental energy from playing basketball and put it into practice with my writing. I’ve been obsessed with improvement for years and I think it’s really driven me as a rapper to make the best music that I can make.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road…
Life isn’t ever really a smooth road for many. Balancing working, trying to get a degree, relationships, paying bills, and trying to chase this dream of mine has been a learning process. It’s difficult to balance. Sometimes it’s hard to create or connect. It’s important to take care of yourself and reach out to your community when you need help.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a rapper. I’m proud to say I rap and I’m a part of this oral tradition. Rap music is far more than a genre to me and I’m proud to take that serious. I’m especially proud of my recent work with the homies on our new EP SYNERGY (now streaming all platforms) I think what sets me apart is my drive. I work very hard, and I have been for years. I’m extremely self-motivated and I try to push myself to get better with every song I make. I love to write music I write every single day. It’s my dream to do this for the rest of my life.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Never stop writing. I think that’s what’s been my guiding light throughout this 6 year journey of mine. When you ground yourself in the love of writing and making music, it all becomes much simpler. When I just have fun and become egoless a kid my creativity that’s when I am reminded why I enjoy doing this in the first place.
