Hi Reema, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into the world of wellness and aesthetics wasn’t a traditional one; it was born out of a desire to shift from treating people on the worst days of their lives to uplifting them on their best. I was born in Windsor, Ontario, raised in Troy, Michigan, and eventually attended the Wayne State University School of Medicine. From there, I trained in emergency medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago and spent over 15 years practicing as an ER physician across Illinois, Georgia, and Michigan.
Working in the emergency room was incredibly rewarding, but the post-pandemic healthcare environment became increasingly difficult and exhausting. While I always took pride in showing my patients grace and compassion, the daily intensity began to wear on me. I realized I wanted to continue impacting lives through medicine, but in a way that generated joy and proactive wellness.
In 2022, I decided to explore medical aesthetics and took my first training course in Chicago. I absolutely loved it. I spent months practicing on friends and family, honing an eye for detail and a philosophy centered around subtle, natural-looking results. By February 2023, while still working almost full-time in the ER, I took a leap of faith and rented a small room inside Aura Health & Spa in downtown Plymouth, launching a part-time business called Rejuvenate & Glow Skincare. When the original owner of Aura later decided to step away from the aesthetics industry, they offered me the opportunity to take over the entire business. In December 2023, I officially became the owner of Aura Health & Spa.
Today, I proudly live in downtown Plymouth with my husband, three children, and our puppy, Buster, while running Aura right in our community. Transitioning from medicine to business ownership was a major learning curve, so I brought on a business consultant to help navigate the things “I didn’t know I didn’t know.”
Since taking over, we’ve renovated the space to create an inviting, comfortable atmosphere, built an incredible team, and expanded our services to include:
Injectables & Advanced Treatments: Botox, dermal fillers, PRP, and Sculptra.
Innovative Technologies: Advanced medical weight loss, wellness and FDA-cleared laser hair restoration programs.
Skin Health: Facials, chemical peels, Morpheus8 RF and SkinPen microneedling & more.
What I love most about my work now is that it is just as hands-on as the emergency room, but instead of managing crises, I get to educate and empower my clients. My goal is to give people the knowledge to make confident aesthetic decisions, helping them look and feel like the best possible versions of themselves, inside and out. Seeing the joy on a client’s face after a treatment is the most rewarding confirmation that I am exactly where I am supposed to be.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but the challenges have made the destination incredibly rewarding. Transitioning from a structured medical career to entrepreneurship brought two major hurdles:
1. The Shift in Work-Life Balance
In the emergency room, my schedule was dictated by shift work. When my shift was over and I walked out those doors, I was truly “off.” Owning a business is a completely different reality. There is no off-switch. I quickly learned that when you own the business, you are always working, always thinking, and always responsible. Finding a healthy boundary between my dedication to Aura Health & Spa and my life with my family has been a steep learning curve.
2. A Whole New Kind of Leadership
While I was entirely used to managing and teaching students and medical residents in the intense environment of the ER, being a business leader proved to be a completely different ballgame. When I first took over, the existing work environment and culture were less than ideal. It took an immense amount of grit, patience, and hard work to navigate that transition, reshape the workplace dynamics, and curate an environment rooted in collaboration, positivity, and care. Today, I could not be more proud of the supportive culture we’ve built and the incredible people I get to work alongside every day.
