Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Dohm.
Hi Brooke, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started makeup when I was 14 and totally obsessed MUA YouTubers. When COVID hit and everything shut down, I turned to TikTok and began doing my makeup every day, using it as an outlet and a way to express myself. That consistency helped me realize how much I loved being creative, whether it was filming content, experimenting with new looks, or doing SFX makeup for plays, shorts, and haunted houses. Over time, it became clear that my passion lived in the creative world, not the medical path I once thought I’d follow. I’m currently a film and Media Advertising student at Grand Valley State University, heading into my final year. Over the years, I’ve explored everything from natural glam to full SFX looks, and it’s become a core part of who I am creatively. As I’ve developed my skills, I’ve also discovered how much I’m drawn to the world of marketing and advertising, especially within makeup, pop culture, music, and event spaces. At 23, I’m excited to finish my degree and pursue a career that blends all the things I love.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, and honestly, it still isn’t. Having an online presence means dealing with people’s opinions, judgments, and backlash, and I learned that early on. I was 15, posting body‑positive TikToks and showing up confidently in my bigger‑bodied frame, and the fat‑shaming comments hit my page, but no thoughts because I loved my body. All of that hurt, but it also shaped me into a strong, grounded woman who knows exactly who she is and refuses to shrink for anyone.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a makeup artist and creative who works across beauty, SFX, and content creation. I’m known for being bold, expressive, and unafraid to experiment, whether that’s building full SFX looks, creating glam that feels effortless, or filming content that captures my personality. I’m most proud of the way I’ve grown my skills from a teenage passion into real work. Whether I’m doing makeup for haunted houses, building an online presence, or shaping my creative identity through film and media marketing. What sets me apart is my mix of authenticity, resilience, and range. I bring both the technical side of makeup and the strategic side of marketing together, creating just beautiful work.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love how creative Grand Rapids has become and how much talent is growing right here in the city. There’s a real sense of community, especially among artists, makers, and young creatives who are building something new. What I like least is the idea that you have to leave to “make it” in a creative industry. People act like success only happens in bigger cities, but that’s just not true. There’s so much potential here, and I’m proud to be part of the group proving you can build a creative career without having to move away.
