Rising Stars: Meet Samuel Banks of Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samuel Banks.

Hi Samuel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into the film industry started about seven years ago when I wanted to launch a podcast. At the time, I was searching for someone to help me film and produce it, but I couldn’t find a camera operator who was willing to work with me. Rather than letting that stop me, I decided to learn the craft myself.
As a veteran, I utilized my GI Bill benefits and enrolled at DSDT in Southwest Detroit, where I received formal training in film production. While attending school, I learned the fundamentals of cinematography, camera operation, production, and even gained some experience in acting. During my time there, I wrote and directed a short film, which gave me my first real taste of what it takes to bring a creative vision to life.
One of the most impactful experiences came when my instructor offered students the opportunity to work on professional film sets and gain hands-on experience. What initially started as a way to film a podcast quickly became a genuine passion. Being on set, collaborating with industry professionals, and seeing the filmmaking process unfold firsthand made me realize that this was something I wanted to pursue seriously.
Shortly afterward, I was offered a position as a First Assistant Camera (1st AC) on a feature film called One More Flip. In that role, I was responsible for helping maintain camera operations, but I also made it a point to study everything the Director of Photography was doing. I understood early on that every opportunity was a chance to learn and grow.
After proving myself on set, I was promoted to Camera Operator and began working as a B-Camera operator on multiple film productions. During that time, I continued sharpening my technical skills while working alongside and filming notable actors such as Clifton Powell, Jamal Woolard, Taral Hicks, Ezel, and many others. These experiences provided invaluable insight into professional filmmaking and further solidified my commitment to the industry.
Beyond narrative film, I also expanded into reality television production. One notable project involved filming a reality show for Better Days Tax Services, where our team traveled across the country documenting operations and interactions at seven different locations. The experience broadened my understanding of storytelling and production on a much larger scale.
While working behind the camera, I often found myself making cameo appearances and delivering small speaking roles in various productions. My transition into acting happened unexpectedly when an actor failed to show up during the filming of Trust Nobody. I was asked to step into the role, and what could have been a setback for the production became a major opportunity for me. The producers appreciated my performance, which ultimately led to a supporting role in Trust Nobody 2. It’s a reminder that sometimes the opportunities meant for you arrive in unexpected ways.
As my experience and confidence grew, I realized I wanted to continue evolving beyond the roles I was being offered. I made the decision to branch out independently, focusing on building meaningful relationships, expanding my network, and creating opportunities not only for myself but for others as well.
That vision led to the creation of BanksOnIt Productions. Through the company, I’ve been able to combine my passion for filmmaking, acting, event production, media coverage, and community engagement. I continue to invest in my growth by studying acting, refining my skills both in front of and behind the camera, and pursuing opportunities that challenge me creatively.
Today, my goal is not simply to work in the entertainment industry but to make a lasting impact through storytelling, collaboration, and creating platforms that bring people together. Whether I’m producing films, organizing community events, working on set, acting in front of the camera, or developing new business ventures, I remain committed to learning, growing, and building a legacy through the work I do.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but I believe every challenge has played a role in shaping my journey and preparing me for where I am today.
One of my earliest struggles was simply getting started. The reason I learned filmmaking in the first place was because I couldn’t find someone willing to help me film a podcast I wanted to create. Instead of giving up, I decided to invest in myself and learn the craft. Looking back, that obstacle ended up becoming one of the biggest blessings in my career because it opened the door to an entirely new industry.
Like many people pursuing careers in entertainment, I’ve faced challenges related to opportunity, recognition, and growth. Breaking into the film industry isn’t easy, especially when you’re trying to establish yourself and prove your value. There were times when I had to work harder than others just to earn a chance to be in the room. I spent countless hours learning, observing, asking questions, and perfecting my skills both behind and in front of the camera.
Another challenge has been wearing multiple hats. As a filmmaker, actor, producer, entrepreneur, and event organizer, there are often responsibilities that people don’t see. While others may only see the finished project, there are countless hours of planning, networking, problem-solving, and sacrifice that happen behind the scenes. Building something from the ground up requires patience, consistency, and faith, especially when immediate results aren’t always visible.
I’ve also learned that growth sometimes requires stepping away from comfort. There came a point when I realized I needed to create more opportunities for myself rather than waiting for them to come. That meant taking risks, branching out independently, launching BanksOnIt Productions, investing in acting classes, expanding my network, and continuing to develop my skills. Starting your own path can be challenging because there isn’t always a blueprint, but it also gives you the freedom to build something that reflects your vision.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that setbacks don’t always mean failure. Some of my greatest opportunities came from unexpected situations. Whether it was stepping into an acting role because someone else didn’t show up or being given opportunities to learn new positions on set, I’ve learned that preparation and perseverance can turn challenges into breakthroughs.
Today, I view every obstacle as part of the process. The road hasn’t been easy, but every struggle taught me something valuable. They helped me develop resilience, discipline, adaptability, and a deeper appreciation for every opportunity I’ve earned. Those experiences continue to fuel my passion for storytelling, community engagement, and creating opportunities for others through BanksOnIt Productions.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I wear many hats within the entertainment industry, which is one of the things I love most about what I do. I am a director, producer, writer, actor, camera operator, and entrepreneur, but above all, I consider myself a connector—someone who brings people together, creates opportunities, and helps build relationships that can lead to growth for everyone involved.
Through BanksOnIt Productions, I work on a variety of projects including films, community events, interviews, media coverage, promotional content, and live productions. My experience spans both behind and in front of the camera. As a filmmaker, I’ve worked in roles ranging from First Assistant Camera and Camera Operator to Director and Producer. As an actor, I’ve appeared in independent films and continue to develop my craft through training and real-world experience.
What I specialize in most is storytelling and creating experiences. Whether I’m directing a film, producing an event, conducting interviews, or developing a project from an idea into reality, my focus is always on creating meaningful connections and memorable moments. I enjoy bringing creative visions to life while also creating platforms that allow others to showcase their talents.
One thing I’m particularly known for is networking and relationship building. I’ve always believed that success is not just about what you accomplish individually, but also about the opportunities you help create for others. Throughout my journey, I’ve built relationships with filmmakers, actors, musicians, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and business owners. I take pride in being someone who can connect people from different backgrounds and industries to create collaborations that might not have happened otherwise.
What I’m most proud of is the impact I’ve been able to make both inside and outside of entertainment. While I am proud of the films I’ve worked on, the productions I’ve helped create, and the talented individuals I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside, I’m equally proud of the community-focused initiatives I’ve organized. From bringing industry professionals into neighborhoods to connect with aspiring talent, to organizing events that create opportunities for artists, entrepreneurs, and families, I’ve always wanted my work to have a positive impact beyond the screen.
I’m also incredibly proud of building BanksOnIt Productions. What started as a desire to learn filmmaking has grown into a platform that allows me to pursue multiple passions while helping others elevate their own careers and businesses. Every project, partnership, and event represents years of learning, persistence, and growth.
What sets me apart is my willingness to continue learning and my ability to operate in multiple areas of the industry. Many people choose one lane, but I’ve invested time into understanding the entertainment business from several perspectives—production, directing, acting, writing, event planning, marketing, and networking. That broad experience allows me to see opportunities where others may not and helps me bring a unique perspective to every project.
More importantly, I genuinely enjoy seeing others succeed. I don’t view networking as collecting contacts; I view it as building relationships. I believe that when people support one another, collaborate, and share opportunities, everyone benefits. That mindset has become the foundation of both my personal brand and BanksOnIt Productions.
At the end of the day, my goal is simple: tell great stories, create meaningful opportunities, bring people together, and leave a positive impact through every project I touch.

What does success mean to you?
Success means different things to different people, but for me, it goes far beyond financial achievements. While I understand that money is important and provides the ability to create opportunities, experiences, and a certain quality of life, I don’t believe money alone defines success.
To me, success is seeing my family happy, healthy, and able to enjoy life. It’s having good physical health, strong mental health, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing the people I care about are doing well. Those things are priceless and can’t be measured by a bank account.
Success is also being able to positively impact others. One of the most rewarding feelings is seeing someone achieve a goal, land an opportunity, make a valuable connection, or take a step forward because of something I was able to contribute. I’ve always enjoyed bringing people together, creating opportunities, and helping others grow. Seeing someone win doesn’t take anything away from me—in fact, it adds to my own sense of fulfillment.
I also define success as having the freedom to do what I love while remaining true to who I am. Being able to create, tell stories, build meaningful relationships, and make a difference through my work is something I never take for granted. Success isn’t about being the most famous person in the room; it’s about making an impact that lasts long after you’ve left it.
Most importantly, success is waking up every day with purpose. It’s knowing that I’m continually growing, learning, challenging myself, and working toward becoming the best version of myself. If my family is smiling, my health is intact, my mind is at peace, and I’ve helped make life a little better for the people around me, then I consider that a successful life.
