Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Ewers.
Kelly , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I originally went to school for film but kind of panicked thinking about what I would do afterwards and just kind of fell into cosmetology when I met a girl in another class who was going through the program. I figured it was something that would make me a living but I could also get into film sets, photoshoots, and all the things I loved. Once I graduated I started at a Regis. It wasn’t glamorous but was a good place to start. I also later started working with a local pin up photographer doing hair and make up from all decades for all kinds of photoshoots. I did this for a few years and it allowed me some really great experiences and connections. During this time I also had a daughter and became a single mom, finished my associates at LCC in fashion. I later, reluctantly, left Regis to go as an independent stylist. The owner of the salon I moved to had a long phone convo with me really encouraging me to go independent. I cannot thank her enough to this day because as terrifying as it was it was the best decision ever. I was there about 5 years and moved to another salon in the height of COVID. After about 5 years there I realized I needed an environment that made all my clients comfortable since I have an eclectic clientele. While searching for a new salon home I started realizing to really make the environment and business I wanted I needed to do it on my own. Which leads me to where I am currently at a salon suite. I can freely run my business however I need to and adapt with the ever changing trends both hair wise and industry/business wise. I’m also so happy to truly have a safe space for all. I’m super happy at this part in my journey and continually strive to adapt and grow my business which makes me very excited for what’s to come.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
During rough economic times it can be scary. Knowing when it is time to leave salons is also huge as I’m not someone who likes to move around a lot but I think it’s so important to be in an environment that you can be happy in order to thrive. Juggling motherhood, family, and a business can be a struggle sometimes
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love doing color. Anything from bold placements to lived in color. I really enjoy most of it. I love my clients leaving smiling and refreshed. I’m great at consultations and really pin pointing what someone is wanting/needing. I feel I’m set apart from others because I really can get alone with all types and I truly want a comfortable easy environment for all.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Take care of your body! Stretching and strength training are musts and really good shoes. Also business classes or education because I feel most individuals in this industry will go independent as their next step and you really need that business background. Be confident and know your worth
