Today we’d like to introduce you to Chrissy Brown.
Hi Chrissy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always been interested in photography and art ever since I was little. Kind of the classic story of starting out young and having the support of your loved ones. I started actually doing freelance photography in 2o18 when I was a senior in high school. It started out as a friend of a friend recommending I do photos for families, birthdays, and graduations. I then went to collage at Collage for Creative Studies (CCS) in Detroit and that is where I formed a love for documentary photography and digital art in general. After graduating CCS in 2023 and facing the ups and downs of the art world outside of school, I now find myself as a full time graphic designer and am fortunate that my schedule is flexible enough to where I can still do the freelance art and personal photography projects that I enjoy.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Oh no definitely not a smooth road for me. The main struggle for me was honestly myself. Just having that constant doubt of was this good enough or taking job rejects as hard failures and not wanting to try again. I also used to have a habit of waiting for the opportunities to find me when in reality I should have been looking and doing research on how to get my art out to more people since the beginning.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Digital Photo Artist, although recently I have been calling myself a photographer with too many hobbies. I combine my love for photography, editing, and collecting art scraps and papers to create surreal collages and vintage bookmarks. My work is both created digitally through photoshop and physically by combining found items and scraps to make my collages. I also have a passion for documentary photography. As a Woman who is of Filipino descent (Half White, Half Filipino) I try to incorporate my family and culture into my photography work. I am proud of myself for having some of my photography work featured in a few online shows and in galleries like The Village Art Factory in Canton, MI and the Dzanc House in Ypsilanti, MI. I also showcase and sell my collages and other crafts at art fairs around the Metro Detroit Area.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I’m very much a foodie so my favorite childhood memory right now would have to be making lumpia (Filipino Spring Rolls) with my mom. It’s something that comes to mind every now and then especially since I still sometimes make lumpia with her.
