Meet Kimberly Cole-Williams of The Boudoir loft and Sister Fire salt co

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Cole-Williams.

Hi Kimberly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey has never followed a straight line. I’m a single mother of six, an entrepreneur, a photographer, and the founder of Sister Fire Salt Co. Every chapter of my life has been built around creativity, resilience, and a love for bringing people together.

For over 25 years, I have owned and operated The Boudoir Loft in Metro Detroit, helping women see their beauty, confidence, and strength through photography. Building that business taught me the value of hard work, personal connection, and creating experiences that make people feel seen.

At the same time, my roots have always been tied to family, food, and tradition. Growing up around family gardens, home cooking, and the spirit of my grandparents’ farm, I developed a deep appreciation for simple ingredients and meaningful meals. That passion eventually inspired me to create Sister Fire Salt Co.

What started as a creative outlet quickly grew into a thriving artisan seasoning business. I began blending handcrafted salts, rubs, finishing salts, popcorn toppers, and gourmet mixes using high-quality ingredients and freshly chosen herbs. Today, Sister Fire Salt Co. can be found at markets across Michigan, where I love meeting customers, sharing recipes, and helping people bring more flavor into their kitchens.

Along the way, I’ve also worked as a nanny, cared for children with special needs, raised my own family, and learned how to adapt through life’s challenges. Those experiences shaped my belief that success isn’t about perfection it’s about perseverance, reinvention, and continuing to follow your passion.

Today, I am fortunate to combine everything I love: creativity, entrepreneurship, photography, food, and community. Whether I’m behind the camera or behind a booth at a market, my goal remains the same to create something meaningful that brings joy, confidence, and connection to others.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.

Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve experienced my share of setbacks, financial challenges, and moments where I questioned whether I could keep going. I’ve raised six children, including two with special needs, while building businesses and balancing the responsibilities of family life. There were seasons when I was working multiple jobs, caring for others, and trying to keep my own dreams alive at the same time.

Running a photography studio for more than 25 years has required constant adaptation. The industry has changed dramatically with technology, social media, and shifts in consumer behavior. There were economic downturns, slow seasons, and unexpected obstacles that forced me to reinvent my business more than once.

Starting Sister Fire Salt Co. came with its own learning curve. I had to learn product development, sourcing ingredients, packaging, branding, marketing, and selling face-to-face at markets. Like any new business, there were events that exceeded expectations and others that didn’t. Every success came with lessons learned through trial and error.

One of the biggest challenges has been learning to believe in myself through uncertainty. Entrepreneurship can be lonely, and there are no guarantees. But I’ve learned that perseverance matters more than perfection. Every challenge has taught me something valuable and ultimately helped me grow stronger.

Looking back, I wouldn’t change much. The struggles shaped who I am today. They taught me resilience, gratitude, and the importance of continuing to move forward, even when the path isn’t clear. Those experiences are what allow me to connect with people authentically, whether I’m behind the camera, caring for children, or sharing products I’ve created with customers.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am fortunate to own two very different businesses, both built around creativity, connection, and helping people experience something meaningful.

The Boudoir Loft has been serving women throughout Metro Detroit for over 25 years. We specialize in boudoir, bridal, maternity, and empowerment photography designed to help clients see themselves in a new light. What sets us apart is our personalized experience. Every session includes expert posing guidance, a comfortable and judgment-free environment, and a focus on helping women feel confident, beautiful, and celebrated exactly as they are. We are known for creating an experience that is just as transformative as the photographs themselves.

What I am most proud of is the impact we’ve had on thousands of women over the years. Many clients arrive nervous or unsure of themselves and leave feeling empowered, confident, and proud. Being part of that transformation has been one of the greatest rewards of my career.

My second business, Sister Fire Salt Co., was born from my love of food, family traditions, and creating unique flavors. We handcraft artisan salts, seasonings, rubs, finishing salts, popcorn toppers, and gourmet mixes using high-quality ingredients and freshly chosen herbs. Our products are all natural, gluten-free, dairy-free, contain no MSG, and are made in small batches with great attention to flavor and quality.

What sets Sister Fire Salt Co. apart is our commitment to creating products that are both approachable and memorable. We focus on bold flavors, simple ingredients, and helping home cooks elevate everyday meals. Customers often tell us they appreciate being able to recognize every ingredient in our blends and that our seasonings make cooking easier and more enjoyable.

Brand-wise, I am most proud of building two businesses that reflect who I am. Whether through photography or handcrafted seasonings, my goal is always to create something that brings people joy, confidence, and connection. I want readers to know that both brands were built from passion, perseverance, and a genuine desire to make people’s lives a little brighter, whether that’s through a photograph they’ll treasure forever or a meal they’ll share with family and friends.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I’ve never considered myself a reckless risk-taker, but I do believe that growth requires courage. Most of the biggest opportunities in my life have come from stepping into the unknown before I felt completely ready.

One of the biggest risks I took was building and sustaining The Boudoir Loft for more than 25 years. When I started, boudoir photography wasn’t nearly as common or accepted as it is today. I believed there was a need for a photography experience that celebrated women and helped them feel confident and empowered. Building a business around that vision required faith, persistence, and a willingness to keep evolving as the industry changed.

Another significant risk was launching Sister Fire Salt Co. after already having an established career. Starting a food business meant learning an entirely new industry—from product development and sourcing ingredients to packaging, marketing, and selling directly to customers. There were no guarantees that people would embrace the products, but I believed in the quality of what I was creating and decided to take the chance.

On a personal level, raising six children while pursuing entrepreneurship involved risk as well. There were times when resources were stretched, decisions were difficult, and the future felt uncertain. But those experiences taught me that risk isn’t about being fearless it’s about being willing to move forward despite uncertainty.

My perspective on risk has changed over the years. I’ve learned that the greatest risk is often not trying at all. While I always do my research and make thoughtful decisions, I’ve found that many of the most rewarding experiences in my life happened because I was willing to step outside my comfort zone. Every challenge, success, and setback has helped shape who I am today.

If there’s one lesson I’ve learned, it’s that risk and resilience go hand in hand. Not every decision works out exactly as planned, but every experience teaches you something valuable. For me, success has never been about avoiding failure it’s been about continuing to move forward, learn, and grow.
