Inspiring Conversations with Marjon Parham of Mastermind Communications LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marjon Parham.

Hi Marjon, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey has been anything but traditional, and that’s what makes it unique.

I started my career as an industrial engineer after earning my degree from North Carolina A&T State University. Over the years, I worked with major companies in the automotive, manufacturing, and engineering sectors, including General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla, Caterpillar, and other global organizations. Those experiences taught me problem-solving, process improvement, leadership, and how to navigate complex environments.

At the same time, I’ve always had a passion for communication, storytelling, and connecting people. What began as an interest in media eventually grew into opportunities in radio, podcasting, public relations, event management, and community engagement. I founded Mastermind Communications, where I’ve had the opportunity to support organizations, brands, nonprofits, and community initiatives through strategic communications, media relations, and events.

Today, I bring together both sides of my background—the analytical mindset of an engineer and the relationship-building skills of a communicator. Whether I’m leading a communications campaign, hosting a radio show, managing a project, facilitating community conversations, or helping organizations solve challenges, my goal is always the same: to inform, connect, and create meaningful impact.

Along the way, I’ve earned a Master’s degree in Communications Management from the University of Southern California, remained active in community service, and built a platform that allows me to inspire and empower others through media, leadership, and advocacy. I often say that my career sits at the intersection of engineering, communications, and community—and that’s exactly where I feel called to be.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but every challenge has helped shape who I am today.

One of my biggest challenges has been navigating multiple career paths. As an engineer, I often found myself being one of the few women—and often one of the few minorities—in the room. I had to learn how to build confidence, advocate for myself, and prove my capabilities in highly technical environments.

At the same time, pursuing my passion for communications and media required me to take risks and step outside of my comfort zone. Building a personal brand, launching a business, hosting radio and podcast programs, and leading communications initiatives all came with their own learning curves and setbacks.

Like many people, I’ve also experienced professional transitions, financial uncertainty, and personal loss. Those moments tested my faith, resilience, and determination. Rather than allowing obstacles to stop me, I chose to view them as opportunities for growth and reinvention.

What I’ve learned is that success is rarely a straight line. The challenges have taught me perseverance, adaptability, empathy, and the importance of serving others. Today, those experiences allow me to connect with people from all walks of life and help others navigate their own journeys with confidence and purpose.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t know if I would call it luck as much as I would call it preparation, faith, and being open to opportunities.

Throughout my life and career, I’ve experienced moments that some people might describe as good luck—meeting the right people, being introduced to unexpected opportunities, or finding myself in rooms that helped shape my future. At the same time, I’ve also faced setbacks, career transitions, financial challenges, and personal losses that could easily be viewed as bad luck.

What I’ve learned is that both positive and negative experiences have played an important role in my growth. The opportunities opened doors, but hard work, perseverance, and relationships helped me walk through them. The challenges strengthened my resilience, deepened my faith, and taught me valuable lessons that continue to guide me today.

I believe success happens when preparation meets opportunity. While I am grateful for the blessings and opportunities I’ve received, I am most proud of my ability to keep moving forward, adapt to change, and continue pursuing my purpose regardless of the circumstances.
