Hi Ryan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My wife Nicole and I have recently purchased a shed business that was originally started by a retired couple. They had initially intended for it to be a side-business to earn a little extra income. However, the quickly found that the demand for quality sheds was driving them further and further into a full-time commitment. Things aligned perfectly for Nicole and I, as I was able to approach them to purchase the business from them. Now they are able to make money as we pay them for the business and Nicole and I are able to start a new chapter for our family as we provide high quality outdoor products for South-west Michigan.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The previous owners did a great job setting us up for success, and have been very gracious with us as we have learned the requirements for running a successful business. But it hasn’t been without any bumps along the way. We have had to maintain good communication internally, as well as with our suppliers in order to keep moving forward.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are in the process of rebranding from Blue Barn Sheds to Blue Barn – Outdoor Living. The reason for this is that we provide more than just sheds, and we want to continue to grow our business and provide more and more products and services as we grow. We provide pre-built or custom-built Amish sheds, cabins, pavilions, swing sets and custom outdoor furniture. We also provide durable docks of multiple styles. All of our products are available with full delivery and installation, to make things as convenient as possible for our customers. With a heavy emphasis on customer service, we are intentional about spending enough time with each costumer to make sure that they get the very best experience with us. We bring our knowledge and expertise to each customer to help them find something even better than they were looking for at a great value. From the moment that they come to us with their needs and questions until well after they have received their product from us, we remain their advocates. All of our products are also back by long lasting warranties, up to 50 years!
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
The couple we are buying from have been phenomenal mentors to us. But we were also able to partner with our local Chamber of Commerce to find local business owners who have been more than willing to share their wisdom with us as we grow. I have found that everyone has something that you don’t know, so it’s worth asking questions and listening with an open mind. Even if their insight doesn’t help right now, you never know what’s coming down the road.
