Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley Buchert.
Hi Haley, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Raising Brave started from a very personal place. After becoming foster parents and later welcoming two boys of our own, we quickly noticed there was a real lack of stylish, fun, and practical options for boys. I still remember sharing with someone that I was pregnant with a boy, and their immediate response was, “That’s a shame, girl clothes are cuter.” That comment stuck with me because it reflected something I had already been feeling: boys’ clothing was often treated like an afterthought.
There was an obvious gap in the retail industry, and I wanted Raising Brave to help fill it in a way that felt intentional, stylish, and true to real boyhood. Boy moms deserve choices that reflect their style, their values, and the bold, playful spirit of their boys. The heart behind Raising Brave was to give boy moms the same joy and excitement in shopping that so often exists in the little girl aisle.
Raising Brave began in 2023 as a small family venture with my mom, doing pop-up markets in a 10×10 tent throughout Indiana and Michigan. What started there has grown into traveling with our boutique trailer, building our online store, and offering our in-house graphic designs for boys to other children’s boutiques across the country.
Today, Raising Brave has grown into a women’s and boys’ boutique built around serving families and creating a shopping experience where moms can shop for themselves and their boys in one place. It has been such a full-circle journey, and we are so grateful for the community that has grown with us.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but it has been worth it. Like many small businesses, we have had to learn as we go, pivot, and figure things out one step at a time. We started with pop-up markets in a 10×10 tent, which meant long days, unpredictable weather, hauling inventory, and learning what our customers truly connected with. Switching from a tent to our traveling boutique trailer has helped tremendously, and helped us stand out to our community.
I would say one of the biggest challenges has been learning how to build a business while also being a new mom of two little boys. Raising Brave was born out of motherhood, but growing it has also meant navigating the constant balance of family, business, and everything in between.
There have been seasons of late nights, working during nap times, packing online orders with my children trying to “assist” (which usually meant I had to repack the orders), and bringing my boys along to pop-up markets. Although it can be chaotic at times, I hope the lessons my children learn through our family business stay with them: the value of hard work, creativity, serving others, and building something with purpose. It has not always been easy, but those moments have made the mission even more meaningful. Motherhood is the reason Raising Brave exists, and it continues to shape how we grow, what we create, and the community we hope to build.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Raising Brave Boutique?
Our boutique is most known for creating and curating boys’ pieces that feel different from what you typically find in the boys’ section. Our designs are inspired by boys who are full of energy, personality, imagination, and adventure. From dirt bikes and skateboards to playful sayings and bold everyday styles, we want our boys’ clothing to feel fun, wearable, and true to the kids who are actually wearing it.
What sets Raising Brave apart is the heart behind it. We are not just selling clothes. We are creating a space where moms feel seen and boys are celebrated.
We are also proud that Raising Brave has grown in a very grassroots way. What began at pop-up markets in a 10×10 tent has grown into an online shop, a mobile boutique trailer, wholesale graphic designs carried by children’s boutiques across the country, and now a brick-and-mortar storefront. Brand-wise, I am most proud that we have stayed true to our mission as we have grown. Raising Brave is bold, welcoming, family-centered, and rooted in the belief that boys deserve better options too.
More than anything, I want readers to know that Raising Brave was built for real families, real motherhood, and real boyhood. We are here for growing families, for celebrating new additions, for finding meaningful gifts, and for helping children feel confident in every new season. Our families are trusting us to help them find pieces for some of their most meaningful moments
Through our store, we get the opportunity to watch families grow, and that is one of the most meaningful parts of what we do. One of the best moments is seeing a baby we first met as a newborn come back as a two-year-old, now excited to pick out an outfit for his birthday. Those moments remind us that Raising Brave is about so much more than clothing.
We want Raising Brave to feel like more than a place to shop. We want it to feel like a community where moms come together, support one another, and feel welcomed exactly as they are. Whether you are shopping for your son, yourself, a gift, or a little everyday confidence, our hope is that you feel seen, welcomed, and excited to be here.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My biggest advice is to start before everything feels perfect. If I had waited for the perfect website, perfect inventory, perfect photos, or perfect plan, Raising Brave would probably still just be an idea. So much of business is learned by actually doing it and diving in.
I wish I had known that every season of business would teach me something different. You will make mistakes, you will have to pivot, and you will probably figure a lot of things out the hard way, but that is part of building something. Stay connected to why you started, listen to your customers, and do not be afraid of small beginnings. Some of the most meaningful growth happens in the messy, behind-the-scenes moments no one else sees!
