Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Boyd.
Hi Morgan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story honestly started with not knowing what I wanted to do for college. The thought of a “forever” career sounded scary when I had so many career ideas in mind. I wanted to go to college because I felt that’s what you should do once you graduate high school. I applied and toured colleges. But ultimately never felt 100% on what I would study, my mind was pulled in many directions as is for most young adults. When in high school I attended the career line tech center searching for something I could call my lifelong career, but I never felt certain. I had friends that attended the cosmetology program, and that had sparked my interest. I asked other students and friends what they did in cosmetology class, and what they liked about it. They told me the main focus was hair, but with your license you can also preform facials, waxing services and eyelash extensions. Everything about that intrigued me, except doing hair! But the facials, waxing, and relaxing treatments intrigued me, so I searched more. And found out you can attend cosmetology school for your esthetician license. All of the services we were taught and trained for intrigued me! Throughout school I looked forward to learning more services, getting better at facial massage and bringing in friends and family to practice on! I quickly learned that Getting to pamper clients with self care can mean so much more than just a short appointment. It can mean a break from stress, a moment to pause and take a breath, and most importantly time for you and only you.
When nearing the end of esthetician school I started to create a resume and apply for any local esthetician & salon jobs near me. I quickly learned a lot of the salon & spas have estheticians already and weren’t in a place to expand. This left me feeling unsure of my decision and what would come next, I knew I wanted to get into the field as soon as possible while all of my knowledge was on the top of my mind. I had an opportunity for a job open up that I didn’t feel 100% about taking, family and friends encouraged me to grab what job I can and learn as much as possible from it. While part of me wanted to do that, the other part felt I could do more and had a dream to go solo. I took my lash training course with Alma Mirela, she taught me more lash styles and multiple ways to apply lash extensions. She had explained how she got started in this industry, by lashing out of her home at first, and she sparked hope in me to open my own business. I made the decision to go with my gut and find my own suite to rent. I got extremely lucky and found a shared suite available 4 days a week. It was the perfect amount for me to get started, while working another job around that.
Ordering all my products, supplies and equipment brought me an excitement I’ll never forget, but also an uncertainty if I could or would succeed. But I pushed that voice to the back of my mind, and began to share to all friends and family my plans. I created a service menu with all of the services that bring me joy. I ran first time client promotions, referral promotions, waxing Wednesday promotions and monthly seasonal promotions to get any clients in the door. The biggest help was listing my business on Google, that and social media is where a majority of my clients have found me. I slowly got busier at the suite and met so many new clients. It is so fulfilling to help clients feel confident in their skin and leave feeling satisfied, I truly look forward to coming to the suite everytime I work. Around 9 months at my current room I got the opportunity to move into my own room with full access 7 days a week! I took this leap as well because I felt ready, confident, and wanted to fully decorate my own space and build my brand. That was about seven months ago, and since then my skills have furthered especially with lash extensions! They have grown to be one of my favorite services to preform! I have loved renovating my suite and truly making it a home away from home. I want my space to feel cozy, inviting and elegant. And most importantly I want clients to walk out feeling heard, cared for, and relaxed!
I look forward to gaining more clients and furthering my knowledge with all of the services I offer. Esthetics is a career that is constantly changing and evolving, so furthering your education is key. I have already had a growth in my appointments from every single month last year and this is only the beginning. Being an esthetician has brought me a feeling of success and joy that I did not expect when I was 17 and struggling with the thought of the future. I am truly grateful for everyone who has supported me thus far and cannot wait to meet new faces!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would not say it has been a smooth road! In the beginning lash extensions were very nerve wracking for me, learning retention and how to create a lash map for different eye shapes. I considered giving up many times and dropping the service overall, but I am thankful I did not.
Many days of having no clients at all, days of over-ordering and learning profit versus expenses in a business were stressful as well. Finding out how to pay yourself, be the book keeper, and post on social media. It certainly all felt overwhelming at times, but I learned from those around me, researched and asked questions from other business owners I look up to. They have all helped me to get to a more confident standpoint in my business!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At MB Esthetics I offer services including facial treatments, back treatments, waxing services, eyelash extensions, brow lamination and brow staining. As well as virtual skin consults for clients to begin with prior to coming in! At this current time I have been most busy with lash extensions, I love the variety of styles and lengths that I get to work with, creating a customized lash set that accentuates your clients natural features is like art! Many people do not realize how precise and timely lash extensions can be to do, which is why the end result is so rewarding! I am most proud of not giving up on lash extensions when I struggled with them in esthetician school, taking two further classes and many days practicing at the suite got me to where I am today. What sets me apart from others is my variety of services, the environment I provide and my confidence with my skills. I am always open to trying a new style of lashes, taking brow models to further my skills and testing new skincare products prior to introducing them to my clients!
What does success mean to you?
Success to me means fulfillment and growth. Fulfillment in the sense that I leave satisfied with my work, that I give each appointment my all, that I make a new client comfortable and excited to come back. Success also means growth to me in the way that I don’t give up, I continue trying to learn ways I can improve, ways I can listen to my clients needs and wants. That I am always working to grow and expand my business so more people know about it!
