Today we’d like to introduce you to A’Lyse Thomas.
Hi A’Lyse, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started doing nails after graduating college. I studied Economics, Leadership and Communications within Organizations, as well as African American Studies at the University of Michigan–Dearborn. Although I had a well-rounded academic experience, I was not quite ready to transition into the corporate world.
After my internship with DTE Energy ended and as the COVID-19 pandemic was coming to a close, I began watching more and more nail tutorials on YouTube. I became fascinated by the range of products that were emerging in the nail industry at the time. I started practicing on my own nails and on my siblings, applying polygel and acrylic. It was a humbling experience, as acrylic is not the most forgiving medium to work with.
I soon realized it was time to pursue professional training. I enrolled at Dorsey School of Beauty in Madison Heights, Michigan, where I completed the program and graduated at the top of my class. From there, I felt fully prepared to step into the beauty industry.
Four years later, I now specialize in manicuring, pedicuring, and press-on nail creation. My press-on nail collections have sold over 300 units since 2022. I also instruct continuing education courses for manicurists seeking to obtain their LARA license across all 50 states. To date, we have graduated three students. I am passionate about teaching the essentials of customer service, quality craftsmanship, and how to build and sustain a profitable business.
Most recently, I have moved into my first suite location. Our grand opening is set for June 29, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. We look forward to welcoming the community and celebrating this new chapter.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, I really struggled with using the monomer and polymer system to apply artificial nails. The liquid-to-powder ratio was a difficult concept for me to master. My acrylic beads would either turn out too large for a natural nail, too runny to properly adhere, or dry too quickly. This left me feeling discouraged. I believed that all good nail techs should be masters at acrylics, and that pressure felt even heavier because acrylic services are the most popular in my hometown of Detroit, Michigan.
In Detroit, acrylic nails are a staple—whether short, long, simple, or intricate designs. Clients often praise or critique your work based on structure and whether you can deliver that “copy-and-paste nail tech” look. That societal pressure made me feel like my artistry wasn’t even worthy of a suite space.
Eventually, I had to pivot. I stepped away from the monomer and polymer system completely and explored something new: press-on nails. Press-ons allowed me to create beautiful designs without the harsh monomer smell and without the pressure of perfecting everything in real time. I had more space to focus on inspiration images and design details without the immediate demand of in-person service.
Since making that shift, my clients have responded positively to the sturdiness and quality of our press-on nails. With the introduction of our own nail glue, clients continue to return for more.
In short, when something does not work for your business, do not force it to fit. Sometimes you need to try a different path—and it may be the better one for you.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Detroit Nail Assassin ?
My business specializes in manicuring, pedicuring, and custom press-on nail artistry, along with virtual master classes that help students obtain their manicurist license and certification. I create salon-quality, reusable press-on sets designed for durability, convenience, and style, and I’ve sold over 300 units since 2022.
What sets my brand apart is the blend of artistry and education. I don’t just provide nail services—I also train aspiring techs through structured virtual courses that prepare them for certification and real-world success in the beauty industry. I’ve proudly graduated three students so far.
What I’m most proud of is my pivot. After struggling with traditional acrylic systems, I created a lane that aligned with my strengths and creativity, building a brand rooted in innovation, resilience, and purpose.
At its core, my brand is about confidence—helping clients feel their best through nails and helping future nail techs build careers they can actually sustain.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
A big part of my creative direction is inspired by my love for Japanese culture and anime. I’m drawn to series like Assassination Classroom, One Piece, Ouran High School Host Club, and Tokyo Ghoul—anything that’s whimsical, high-energy, and action-driven. I bring that same energy into my work, translating bold storytelling, character, and creativity into my nail sets.
