Exploring Life & Business with Alyssa Sumption of Social Assumptions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Sumption.

Hi Alyssa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Starting a business in my parents’ basement was never the plan, but boy, am I happy it happened that way!

While in my second year of college, I created an Etsy digital product. 1 turned into 300, and businesses started reaching out to me asking to run their social media. Then, a bride asked me on Instagram to capture her wedding for her, as I do for my clients.

Working at a social media agency, I learned one thing. There are photographers and videographers, but who can you hire to capture iPhone or authentic high-quality visuals?

That’s when I realized the need for Onsite Content Creation. After booking and capturing my first wedding on-site as a content creator, I fell in love! With a background in social media management, it was easy to go throughout the day capturing content with an authentic, aesthetic eye. I love being able to capture important moments that can be treasured in a camera roll or shared on social media.

I am forever grateful that what started as a lifelong creative outlet led to building my own business.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Competition. Not just what you see on Social Media, but in the creative industry. I have heard photographers say, “In 10 years, people will look back on content creation services and wonder why they spent money on it.”

Content Creators are not taken seriously enough in the creative industry. They are a valuable documenting service, not just showing up with an iPhone. On social media, it looks like an easy job with a lot of benefits. Lavish parties, VIP treatment, great hours. In reality, there is no 401 (k), health insurance, sick time, vacation time, work summer weekends, primarily, we’re truly working ourselves to burnout, and it’s not respected enough.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business is all about capturing moments authentically with a creative eye for social media.

My focus is on helping businesses show up in a way online that feels current, engaging, and human. What sets me apart is how collaborative my process is. I truly love working closely with every client to understand their vision, their audience, and what makes them unique. No two projects or content shoots feel the same, and that’s intentional. That connection and collaboration is what allow me to create content that authentically reflects the brand or moment.

Brand-wise, I am most proud of how SOCIAL ASSUMPTIONS® has grown with me since I first started the business over 6 years ago.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I’ve always been a creative at my core. Growing up, I was the definition of an Energizer Bunny. Constantly talking, full of ideas, and always wanting to make something. I was the kid who couldn’t turn it off, always thinking, creating, and imagining what something could be.

I got my first camera when I was 11, and that’s really when everything clicked. By 12, I was already teaching myself Adobe Photoshop, experimenting, editing, and figuring things out as I went. From that point on, I’ve been creating online in some form ever since—whether it was photos, edits, content, or eventually full-on onsite content creation.

Looking back, it makes so much sense that this is what I do now. That same energy, curiosity, and creativity I had growing up is exactly what I bring into my work today
