Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Kababik.
Hi Katie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Photography is always something I have enjoyed doing, even in high school. After graduating nursing school, I realized I didn’t have many hobbies and decided to pick the camera back up to find other ways to “fill my cup” per se. I am completely self taught when it comes to photography and editing.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course every journey has challenges. I think the biggest challenge is really finding my own style or niche. There are a lot of photographers out there, so finding ways to make my work stand out has been something I am constantly working on.
Another “struggle” I would say is that it is not my full time job, so finding ways to balance the hobby, the 9-5 and family life has been challenging.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I really enjoy photographing families, couples and have even started dabbling in the wedding world. My style is very warm and moody tones. I really try to focus on the client experience overall. Photoshoots can be challenging for clients so I try to make it a happy & fun experience for the client, I think thats what really sets me apart from others.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
In my personal opinion it’s essential to take risks in order to build something meaningful. I am also a very firm believer in growth doesn’t occur when you’re comfortable. The biggest breakthroughs usually come from having the courage to take a chance and move forward despite uncertainty.
I have taken risks, most definitely. I ended up purchasing a “professional” camera before even knowing if photography would work for me. Camera gear unfortunately is not cheap, so more of a financial risk at the beginning. Then, once I saw that it was something I really wanted to continue to pursue and started building a clientele, I purchased an even better camera and lens. Time is also something that you never get back, so I have dedicated a lot of man hours in the last year learning, growing and improving my skill. But that doesn’t come at no cost, being a mom and wife, theres also the time away from family I have given up, without knowing what this hobby would end up for me.
