Today we’d like to introduce you to Clint Kyro.
Hi Clint, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
These things can be very boring, so I’m going to keep it brief for your reading pleasure. I’m 52, grew up in a small town called Chassell in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and ever since I was a kid I’ve been into drums and drumming. Growing up in the 80’s on a Friday night I’d take my boom box and favorite tapes and go in the basement to play along to Poison, Cinderella, Journey, Triumph, Van Halen etc. I’ve never drank, smoked or touched any drugs and I don’t drink coffee. Before you ask though, it’s not a religious thing, I’ve just never liked any of those things. I’m talking strictly on taste alone; coffee is too strong tasting and beer is disgusting. Yes, I am aware that you can acquire a taste for these things but why? Yuck! And I credit my Grandma Dorothy with never smoking even though everyone in my family was a smoker. She pounded it in my head to never start because everyone who smokes has either tried to quit or has tried to quit in the past but couldn’t. Also? I like being a drummer. Whoop Whoop!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
At 52 you can look back and remember how when you were in your 20’s you quit your job with the state of MI to move down to Birmingham, Alabama on a whim. Then you try to go from Birmingham to LA with $200 in a beat up Chevy Blazer only to run out of money 3/4 of the way there. So you pull into Vegas with $7 in your pocket and call your singer to have him Western Union you some cash so you can make it to California. Then you settle down in LA, realize that holy moly, there are musicians and actors everywhere so you join like 5 bands and can not believe they don’t let you park for free when you pull up at Canter’s in Hollywood to play your first gig. I’m the drummer! I shouldn’t have to pay to park here! I’ve paid to play for a show opening up for LA Guns on the Sunset Strip and I got to play Coconut Teazer’s before it shut down. I’ve done two showcases, one for Capitol Records and one for an indie label with Dave Silva who was in Bad Radio with Eddie Vetter before Pearl Jam was a thing. They both passed and I ended up back in Birmingham when I got my on/off girlfriend pregnant. Back then I thought cover bands were a joke, and not a real band per se. Now? I have zero interest in doing originals except for maybe a song or two because my ship of being signed to a major label has passed and I’m OK with it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a social services designee in a nursing home. I love it, and it’s the same job my uncle had 30 years ago. I always looked up to him so for me to have that exact same job makes me feel like a real adult.
How do you think about happiness?
Here’s an example: As I write this it’s Sunday, June 7, 2026. Last night I played a show with one of my bands and my old friends got to meet my current friends and girlfriend. Not only that but one of my old friends that came by happened to be my former guitarist and it turns out that I need a fill-in player for some shows this week and he just happens to be in town taking care of his terminally ill father. He said he has down time and he’s gonna play the show so that right there is like; it’s the circle of life, he’s there for his dad, I get to play with him again and I work with the elderly so I have an understanding of what he’s going through. Plus, my girlfriend is also my singer in my other project so they will be jamming together. I mean, come on! How cool is that?
