Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Straughter.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started modeling my senior year of high school. A friend of my mother’s is also a fashion designer and noticed me right away. She convinced me to getting it to modeling and actually put me in my first show. After that, I fell in love with the feeling that modeling gave me. I was inspired to start building up my portfolio! I worked effortlessly over the next few years to get noticed. If I wasn’t working or in class I was finding a fashion show to be apart of or a photographer to work with. As time went by, I got to the point where I was actually getting booked and There was never a time I was not doing photoshoot. When you’re truly passionate about something, you won’t let anything stop you.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being in the modeling industry is never easy , there are struggles that people don’t see outside of the glitz an the glamour. Although all I ever wanted to do was model, there was a time when it became really hard to focus on doing my classes and working to pay bills while trying to make sure I stayed on top of my modeling. There are models who have their full attention on doing photo shoots and fashion shows while I had to make it a third priority even though it was my passion. The long days working and traveling back and fourth to make it to rehearsals. Not too long ago I took a break from general because it was very harsh on mental health. Trying to keep up and once there’s a pause on you getting booked it makes you feel as if you’re not worthy to be in the field.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Outside of modeling, I’m currently in school for nursing with the plans on becoming a nursing midwife. That is one of the things I’m most passionate about now. With the lack of black women in the healthcare field this is where I am meant to be. Although I still love modeling and will definitely do photo shoot when asked I prioritize focusing on working towards my career. One of the things that sent me a part from others is the energy and passion in my posing. Whenever I do a photoshoot I give it my all and make sure I express myself in each and everyone. I’m glad I am able to make way to both continuing modeling while following my dreams of becoming a nursing midwife
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My community makes me happy I have an abundance of support from family and friends. I love the theory root me on no matter what path that I follow those who know that I want to become a nurse support me and helped me study and my modeling community that supports me every time they see me on social media ! During the moment of a photoshoot when the lights from the camera are flashing I am also very happy! I get the feeling of butterflies in my stomach !
