Rising Stars: Meet Monae Champion of Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monae Champion.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I always knew I was different, I never fit in anywhere. I just never expected my life leading to a career in entertainment. The first 24 years of my life I lived an ordinary life and worked a traditional job when the time came. In 2021, a coworker mentioned that Mula Films (One of the most popular Detroit Production Company’s) was looking for extras for the hit series “McGraw Ave” and encouraged me to attend. What started as a background role quickly turned into a passion of mine when I booked one of my most recognized roles, Alicia, in the popular Detroit series H-Block, a spin-off of McGraw Ave.

In 2022, I booked my first lead role in “Daddy I Love Him”, available on Amazon Prime and Tubi, solidifying my commitment to the craft. I expanded into modeling, taking professional training seriously in 2023 and earning a spot in the Burghalie Academy New York Fashion Week Fall Season Show, sponsored by MAC Cosmetics which is how I developed my love of fashion.

From the outside, it may seem like my career happened overnight. While opportunities began arriving quickly, they were built on years of preparation, persistence, and struggling to balance my creative ambitions alongside traditional employment. After being fired from my last 9-to-5 job in December 2025, I made the decision to bet on myself fully and pursue entertainment as a full-time career. Everyone who knows, knows that in that moment that’s where the pressure was on. When you let go of the safety net that a 9-to-5 job provides.

Today, I’m represented by Production Plus, one of Michigan’s leading talent agencies, while continuing to build my rapidly growing personal brand, MonaeTheActress. As my career expands across film, television, modeling, and entrepreneurship, I am more committed than ever to creating a legacy rooted in authenticity, integrity, and intentionality.

It’s now that I realize I’ve always been a creative. From winning art shows in middle school, competitive cheerleading all my life, to acting as an adult, and learning to sew and express myself through my clothes.

If I’ve learned anything throughout my journey it’s that consistency beats talent, do it because you genuinely love it not because of what the success brings, and don’t compare yourself. Be authentic.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Coming from an empath, majority of my struggles were mentally and emotionally. That’s one thing I can say, being an entrepreneur and or pursing a career at the highest level causes you to grow in every aspect forcing you to look in the mirror and do the shadow work. Even now, I’m navigating emotional discipline and discernment in general. Those are SO important, as a woman once we get wrapped up in relationships we lose focus and sometimes motivation but as soon as you break up you end up thriving. It’s because for the most part men hold up back. With discernment, this is huge regarding who you surrounded yourself with, business deals, contracts, opportunities etc. All money isn’t good money and sometimes things are either too good to be true or have invisible strings attached. So my struggles have been internal. A me vs. me battle. Exercising accountability, responsibility, and intentionality. Am I going to hangout with my friends or go home and study for my role, am I going to eat out or go grocery shopping for the week, am I going to eat ice cream all week or workout every morning. Having a routine is EVERYTHING because you’re subconsciously building consistency. I could talk about life lessons all day.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an American Actress, Model, and Entrepreneur. I’m known for my role in the hit series “H-Block”, available on Tubi and Ucult streaming app, and my personal style and influence. I’m a fashionista with crazy aura. I’m most proud of this year actually. Not relying on a 9-to-5, stepping out in faith, and trusting the process. It’s way scarier than it sounds! Huge upcoming moments for me will be the premiere of my lead role in “Damsel” directed by Justin Milton in Houston, Texas, the premiere of “Ride Share” directed by mainstream Artist Icewear Vezzo and locally famous videographer/director Diego Cruz, and the debut of my fashion brand! It’s under wraps for now, but it’s coming! What sets me apart is the easiest question ever to answer: my authenticity, my aura, my creativity.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
One of the best things about Detroit is the overall authentic feel. It’s nothing like it, everyone is a celebrity. Our style, fashion, and culture stands out no matter where we travel! My least favorite thing about my city is how hard it is to “make it” here, you really have to build your platform elsewhere first to be accepted or respected. There is a lot of gatekeeping, which I’ve experienced firsthand, people want you to be good just not better than them – but then again that everywhere you go.
