Meet John & Thomas McGuin of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu South Bend

Today we’d like to introduce you to John & Thomas McGuin.

Hi John & Thomas, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
John and Thomas McGuin’s journey in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu began with a spark of curiosity after watching a fight featuring MMA legend Nick Diaz. Inspired by the effectiveness and technical nature of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, John stepped onto the mats at 19 years old, with Thomas following in his footsteps just one year later. What started as a shared interest quickly became a lifelong passion and a calling that would shape both of their lives.

As they progressed through their training, John and Thomas fell in love with more than just the techniques of Jiu-Jitsu. They embraced the values it represents; discipline, humility, perseverance, and using knowledge to empower others. Their dedication to preserving and sharing the Gracie methodology led them to open Gracie Jiu-Jitsu South Bend with a vision of creating a welcoming environment where people of all ages and backgrounds could build confidence, learn practical self-defense, and become part of a supportive community.

Their commitment to the art has been recognized at the highest levels of the Gracie organization. In February 2026, both John and Thomas earned their second-degree black belt stripes from Ryron Gracie and Rener Gracie, grandsons of Helio Gracie and key figures in carrying on the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu legacy.

Today, their greatest accomplishment extends beyond rank or recognition. It’s the community they have built through Gracie Jiu-Jitsu South Bend. The Academy has become a place where individuals and families can grow together, and that commitment to serving the community has been honored with Gracie Jiu-Jitsu South Bend being voted South Bend’s Best Fitness Center/Gym in both 2024 and 2025.

Looking back, what began with two brothers inspired by a Nick Diaz fight has evolved into a mission to positively impact lives through Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. John and Thomas remain dedicated to helping every student who walks through their doors become stronger, more confident, and better equipped both on and off the mats.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has not been a smooth road, but every challenge along the way has reinforced why John and Thomas do what they do. One of the most difficult experiences they faced was the passing of their father. Navigating that loss while continuing to chase their dreams and make the decision to begin their own business was incredibly challenging. During that time, Jiu-Jitsu became more than just a martial art for them; it became an outlet, a source of stability, and a reminder of the importance of community and perseverance.

Like many business owners and instructors, John and Thomas have also experienced moments of self-doubt. There were times when they questioned whether they were making the right decisions, doing enough for their students, or capable of achieving the vision they had for their academy. Building something meaningful comes with uncertainty, and they have certainly encountered obstacles and setbacks along the way.

However, those experiences have shaped them into the instructors and leaders they are today. They have learned valuable lessons in resilience, humility, and the importance of continuing to move forward even when circumstances are difficult. Seeing the positive impact Gracie Jiu-Jitsu South Bend has had on the lives of their students and within the community has made every challenge worthwhile. The struggles they have faced have not only strengthened them personally but have also deepened their commitment to creating a place where others can find confidence, support, and growth through Jiu-Jitsu, just as they have.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Gracie Jiu-Jitsu South Bend?
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu South Bend is more than a martial arts academy, it’s a community built on the principles of respect, empowerment, and personal growth. John and Thomas McGuin have worked to create an environment where people of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels feel welcomed and supported from the moment they step onto the mats.

The Academy specializes in teaching authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, with a strong emphasis on practical self-defense rather than competition alone. Our programs are designed to meet students where they are in life, offering classes for young children through Gracie Bullyproof®, teens, women through Women Empowered®, beginners through Gracie Combatives®, and advanced students through Master Cycle®. This structured approach allows every student to build confidence and skills at a pace that works for them.

What truly sets Gracie Jiu-Jitsu South Bend apart is its culture. The Academy has become known as “The Home of Love & Leverage,” reflecting the belief that while Jiu-Jitsu teaches effective self-defense techniques, it also fosters kindness, support, and genuine connection. John and Thomas are committed to ensuring that every student feels seen, encouraged, and valued, whether they are stepping onto the mats for the very first time or have been training for years.

Brand-wise, they are most proud of the community they have built. They have watched students gain confidence, children overcome bullying through self-assurance and awareness, women discover strength and empowerment, and families find an activity they can enjoy together. The relationships formed within the academy extend far beyond training sessions, creating a supportive environment where people celebrate one another’s successes both on and off the mats.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu South Bend has also been honored to be recognized by the community as South Bend’s Best Fitness Center/Gym in both 2024 and 2025. While these awards are meaningful, John and Thomas consider their greatest accomplishment to be the trust that students and families place in them each day.

Above all, they want readers to know that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is truly for everyone. Whether someone is looking to learn self-defense, improve their fitness, build confidence, help their child develop important life skills, or simply become part of a welcoming community, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu South Bend strives to provide a place where every individual can grow stronger; physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Their mission has always been simple: to change lives through Jiu-Jitsu, one person and one family at a time.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For John and Thomas McGuin, success is not defined by belt rank, awards, or the size of their academy, although they are grateful for the recognition Gracie Jiu-Jitsu South Bend has received. Instead, they measure success by the positive impact they have on the lives of others.

Success is seeing a child who once struggled with confidence stand a little taller. It’s watching someone walk through the doors nervous to try their first class and eventually become a leader within the academy. It’s helping women feel empowered through self-defense, seeing families bond over a shared activity, and creating an environment where people feel supported and accepted exactly as they are.

They also define success by staying true to their mission and values. Building a community rooted in respect, humility, perseverance, and service has always been more important than external achievements. If they can continue to provide a place where students grow not only in their Jiu-Jitsu abilities but also as individuals, they consider that a success.

Ultimately, John and Thomas believe success is measured by legacy rather than accolades. If they can positively influence their community, help people become more confident and capable, and leave a lasting impact on the lives of the students and families they serve, then they know they have succeeded.
