Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate Seites.
Hi Nate, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I discovered my love for photography while hiking in Oregon and I wanted to share what I was seeing with my friends back home. While I loved landscape photography, I wanted to try and find a different niche. Fast forward a few years, I went to the Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids to see my cousin’s band headline a sold out show. The energy and excitement that was in that venue woke something up in me and I had to go to more shows, so I bought a ticket to the next show at that venue and while hardly any people were there, one person was with their camera taking photos of the show. Music photography never crossed my mind and instead of watching the show, I paid attention to the photographer instead. The next show I could go to, I brought my camera. The photos from that night were good enough to make me think that this is something I can pursue. Almost three years later, I’ve been hired on as a house photographer at two venues, shot in beautiful theatres, an arena show in Chicago, and shot for the legendary band TOTO.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Jumping in to music photography was a challenge. Learning how to take quality photos in dark rooms was a huge learning curve, but I loved the challenge and kept pushing my skills and knowledge to achieve that goal. Another challenge was figuring out how to photograph larger shows and bands without being part of a publication. Growing my confidence and letting my work speak for itself has allowed me to go a lot further than I thought!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in colorful music photography. I love showing what the energy and vibe was like at a show. I’m most proud of being a self-taught photographer who continues to grow and have bigger opportunities every year. I have a very diverse portfolio covering an eclectic range of music shown in all kinds of spaces.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Going to shows where I have no idea who the bands are and being blown away by their talent. Getting to learn how vast and talented the Michigan music community is has been eye opening. Phenomenal bands are everywhere in Michigan! Seeing peoples reactions to photos never gets old. Aside from photography, I love hanging out with my cat, record collecting, traveling, and meeting new people.
