Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Soltysiak.
Hi Paul, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Back in 2019, my friend Andy DeVries and I met each other playing catch at our old neighborhood ballpark – Sullivan (formerly Valley) Field. After reminiscing about all the great memories we had there, we decided to start a Facebook group – Fans of Valley Field, which now has nearly 7000 members. That blossomed into a 501c3 non-profit, which has worked with the City of Grand Rapids (the owner of the park) on many community events and ballgames. We embarked upon a Capital Campaign in an effort to raise money to save/refurbish the grandstand and ballpark. We recently surpassed our goal – and the renovation is slated to be complete late this year! I am so very proud of our work, and all the help and friends we have been able to rally. It is truly a historic, special place. At last count, we have identified over 80 players who appeared on our field who played in the Major Leagues. We’ve also hosted live music and arts events – and things such as the WestSide Easter Egg Hunt, and the huge Chili CookOff at the Ballpark, with up to 40 chili teams. We look forward to the completion of the renovation work, and to what the future will bring to this gem on the WestSide of Grand Rapids!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
While the road to where we are now has been blessed with so much community support and generosity, it has not been easy! Challenges with raising money and with construction “surprises” and delays didn’t slow us down!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve been in the graphic arts/printing industry my entire career, and I still love it. It’s fast-paced, fun – and never boring! I like to share my experience with others, and try to avoid pitfalls. I am also always learning, which I love. I’m proud of all the friends I have made and introductions I have facilitated throughout my professional career, and with my non-profit group.
What are your plans for the future?
I supposed I should slow down soon, but I’m having too much fun – and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
