Conversations with Chris Huntoon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Huntoon.

Hi Chris, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In 2017 Chris Huntoon was introduced to micro greens. After learning about their super nutritional value he went to the local grocery store to buy some. They didn’t have any. He eventually found some in a health food store, like a bag salad, half dead in a clam shell. Lifeless baby plants in a clam shell? He decided to do something about that, and the rest is history.

From that first idea with a mission that living food is medicine, 1st Micro Greenery has grown into a major food producer in West Michigan. We also offer custom subscriptions (CSA) to meet your specific needs.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Too many to mention here. Because I grow inside a 100 year old house,, I am responsible for everything the plants require.
Light, temperature, humidity, air flow, water, and bugs. Yes bugs do find a way to get inside a climate controlled 100 year old house. if a piece of equipment fails, it can cripple the whole grow. A timer fails the fragile system stops working. I came home to a lifeless grow tray because I forgot to plug in the pump after cleaning. If the lights don’t turn on automatically the plants stop growing. If a new batch of seeds grows differently, I don’t find out until they have grown. 7 – 14 days later. Then I have to adjust all the various systems to compensate. Customers tastes change and I have to adapt to their new wants.
The farm is always flowing

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the future of farming. With climate change, Farming outside may not be sustainable. I am pioneering a new concept of living produce on your kitchen counter. The “healthy snack”
Everyone else sells lifeless dying produce that they call “fresh”
Most micro greens begin to “melt” and lose flavor the moment they are cut. 1st Micro Greenery changes the game by delivering produce with the root system intact, providing you with a biologically active ingredient that stays at its absolute peak until the moment of consumption..

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
