Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Villegas.
Hi Rachel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started making earrings in 2019 part-time to pay for my daughter‘s braces. I started out with leather earrings and then transitioned to polymer clay in 2020 and most recently laser-cut acrylic and wood to have more creative options. I started out doing small local craft shows. It wasn’t easy at first, the sales weren’t the best. I would bring a shoe box of earrings to dentist office and the girls doctors to sell to the ladies! I was very ambitious, and willing to do anything to help my little business grow.
I think how I got to where I am at today is because of having that ambition and drive. Also applying to bigger markets helped my business grow tremendously. To name a few of the markets- Merchants and Makers, Ann Arbor Art Fair, Coast Guard festival, Art Prize, and the Grand Rapids Christkindl Markt.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely hasn’t always been smooth. My first show I made $90. My second show I made $150. It was also hard because I was still working as a CNA and being a single mother on top of that. Having a positive mindset and drive helped me to keep going.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Two years ago, I decided to pursue my business full-time. It was the best decision for me and my family! Every year I try to expand my business and offer something new. In addition to earrings. I also make printed sweatshirts and T-shirts. In 2024 I opened a storefront offering boutique clothing, my jewelry and sweatshirts. Unfortunately I had to close after 10 months due to there being issues with the building. I was pretty bummed at first, but honestly, I love doing markets. They’re very successful for me and I have so much fun! So it works out well for me. I don’t have to deal with the overhead and I’m in control of what days I want to work.
I think what I’m most known for is caring for others and helping them! My jewelry and clothing is an extension of that by providing something unique that makes people feel beautiful and brings them joy! I especially love doing markets because you get to have those moments of joy with my customers.
I think what I’m most proud of is doing this by myself as a single mom. I’m teaching my daughters to be hardworking and independent! Although at times I do have help from friends, family, and my daughters. Which is great because when you’re running a business solely by yourself, you can get burnt out somewhat.
What sets me apart for others? That’s a tough question because most of the other small businesses I know are all amazing people. I think we all have the same goal in mind, but some people are more about the money/sales.
I’m not just focused on the money or getting a sale. The customer doesn’t always have to buy something from me. Sometimes they just want to chat. Maybe they’re having a hard day. Other vendors might get annoyed by having someone come to their booth and not buy something and talk the whole time. Some people just need to talk, and have someone listen to them. And I’m happy to be that person. 🙂
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is making a positive impact and creating something authentic. I want people to feel the passion and care behind what I do, not just see it as another business. I’ve actually had customers tell me this, so I guess I’m on the right track!
