Rising Stars: Meet Angel Agnew, CPA of Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Agnew, CPA.

Hi Angel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In 2020, I was a college student when God led me to start Jesus and Justice Apparel amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and social unrest with cases like George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and more. Having just lost my job due to the pandemic and CMU moving to virtual classes, I was still determined to do my part in the midst of uncertain times. I could not just sit back and do nothing.

I had the desire to contribute something more tangible to my community and financially to social justice causes that were fighting the good fight while also reminding others of God’s heart for justice. Our apparel isn’t just fashion. It’s with a purpose. This is why a portion of all proceeds are donated to different organizations as well.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was not always a smooth road while starting and continuing to run this kingdom business. I even took a hiatus until God prompted me to relaunch Jesus and Justice Apparel in 2026. Between employment changes, wrapping up my final classes of undergrad virtually, writing a book, volunteering, and studying for my Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exams, the biggest battle was time management as I juggled it all.

Also, being a new entrepreneur was full of the unknown. Would I get a return on this financial investment? Would the message resonate with others? I very quickly got comfortable with the uncomfortable, and real growth took place.

Our message may not be understood by all, but it is still for everyone. Apparel with a purpose: sharing that faith in Jesus and social justice are intrinsically inseparable. As Isaiah 61:8 says, “For I, The Lord, love justice…” God cares about you and what you are facing. We and our customers are constantly engaging in hard yet fruitful conversations on faith, hope, and justice.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Purpose Pursuer from Detroit, Michigan with a passion for pursuing purpose and encouraging others to discover theirs. I’m a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the state of Michigan with a career that has spanned across industries and notable companies including the Detroit Pistons and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Currently, I am the Accounting Manager of the Nashville Sounds, the Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

I have spoken for organizations including Plante Moran, the Michigan Association of CPAs, and Wayne State University School of Medicine. I also authored “Graduate to Freedom: The How-To Guide of Graduating Debt-Free From an HBCU and PWI.”

I’m a first-generation graduate with Summa Cum Laude honors from Central Michigan University (CMU). There I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with a minor in Information Systems. I strive to leave an impact on all that I interact with in my community and the world.

My passion to see others free from injustice and free from financial debt has become my God-given purpose. I’m just grateful God saw fit to use this little girl from the eastside of Detroit to help spread His message of hope and good news to the world.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’d say I’m naturally risk averse. If left up to me, I’d play it safe. However, God has called me to take many risks: starting a business with my own money, quitting a job, moving states, and so much more. I just view them as leaps of faith now: trusting God’s call and provision. Where He leads, I follow. That may seem risky to some, but the safest place for me is in God’s will. He’s never let me down.
