Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerby Killingham.
Hi Kerby, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began pursuing the journey of becoming a mental health clinician after being incarcerated and seeing many young men such as myself, incarcerated. And if we had proper counseling or proper male modeling, most of us would not have been incarcerated. Since then, as you can imagine, there are many, many obstacles I’ve had to overcome to become a mental health clinician, but since then I have used the platform to allow other clinicians to actually intern and go through the process as well underneath me from my experience and my supervision.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road from college to practicum to internship to actual employment. I believe being a mental health clinician with a felony background has made my journey a lot more difficult than other individuals.

Decisions counseling group LLC is a mental health practice located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Decisions Counseling Group is now at a point where it is going to expand to bring on two or three more mental health clinicians. At Decisions Counseling Group, we serve all peoples, from youth up to adults, men and women. Multiple demographics and orientations are served. I myself specialize in trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy. I started off with my scope of concentration, being on working with adolescent recidivism. I myself was a troubled youth, and I realized that I could have benefited significantly from mental health therapy. I don’t know if anything I do sets me apart from others. However, when we talk about youth violence and youth intervention, I believe I am the only person in Kent County, MI who can simultaneously serve as an independent clinician and also serve as a peer support specialist. I hope readers and followers of this interview learn that I am an advocate for youth and adults struggling with any and all mental health issues.
Any big plans?
There are many things that I look forward to doing with decisions, counseling group and myself in the future. However, just to name a few of the Low hanging fruit Decisions Counseling Group and myself are looking to expand with more clinicians who share the same passion and drive that I do, which is serving this enfranchised individuals and families throughout Kent County, Michigan.
