Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonya Nicks.
Hi Tonya, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started as a child loving people, the earth and of course shopping. As I grew I knew I had a special gift of gab. Life threw me twists and turns i was an adult and forgot all about my dreams and aspirations in midts of just surviving. Fast forward to a day when there was a storage auction sign and it all began. The love for a surprise and the hunt for a treasure wrapped in one got me hooked. My late partner Brandon and I had now gotten many and had tried the yard sale way of getting rid of the items we knew had lots of life. Well that wasnt working people wanted yard sale prices for really nice items. Then Brandon asked me why I dont just open a store. My first sentence back was, no one is going to just give me a place for a store. He told me I wouldnt ever know if I didn’t try. So I got to looking around and it wasnt a month later and I found a spot in Kingsley. It was a beautiful dream come true, a dream to be a staple to help to bridge a gap between people with not a lot of money to be spent but had good taste. High End Resale was born. The following began. Had a good run, COVID hit. Brandon unexpectedly passed away on the job. Life was crumbling all right before me. I had so many people tell me Brandon wouldnt want to see me give up on my store and I should still fulfill my dreams. So I jumped back in-moved to Fife Lake and have been just learning more about the community. I have been able to help people in house fires. (Close to my heart as I too was in a house fire at a very young age) I’ve been able to donate to help home town causes. We sponsored a softball team and have big plans to do expand and bring something other than a ‘normal” thrift store. Something for everyone.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to this point has not been easy but urge to be better and the dream to c9me alive. Covid was a big struggle like most businesses we had to come up reimagine of how we did business. We had online shopping options with door pick ups. The loose of someone special that helped me create this dream almost broke me. Im resilient and full of joy for everyday which helps me push forward through the walls owning a small business can build. With everyday issues like furnace problems, weather anomalies and just life.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have a 40 hour job that I work in customer service for a hospital. This helps me understand problems amongst communities and families. I can see small things people might not seen as an opportunity to help, but i do. I am a person who is a giver. Someone who loves life and those around me. I’d say im honestly most proud of keeping my head up and never being discouraged even in the darkest of moments in life. I believe I have a wonderful sense of understanding. Something that I was not expecting was that my shop is a therapeutic safe place. I’ve had people just come in my store and tell me the most intimate parts of their life and apologizing explaining they just need to get it out. Which I am absolutely honored to be that person for them. With all of the unfortunate experiences in my life and to still have a positive mind set, i believe that helps people understand life moves fast and we can overcome the life obstacles. We can learn and practice to be stronger internally and for our neighbors.
What were you like growing up?
A lover a tom boy i was always out in the woods talking to the animals and trees. Always the teachers pet and having to be front and center. Was on the teeball teams doing cartwheels and waving as I ran to first base.
