Today we’d like to introduce you to Skyline Event Center.
Hi Skyline Event Center, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Skyline Event Center is a small venue in Northeast Michigan, known primarily for listening room concerts, original and independent artists perform for a very enthusiastic audience and enjoy an opportunity to join in a wonderful community activity. Skyline is operated by a one hundred percent volunteer group of community minded people who believe that music and art are important to keeping a community together. Skyline was organized and initiated by the late Sy Yoder whose legacy the volunteers hope to keep strong and are committed to Sy’s dream of music in this small community.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Listening rooms are always challenging. Finding the right music is very important but so is finding an audience and when your venue is located in an area as rural as Comins, Michigan it is very challenging. We have been very pleased that most folks once they try a show at Skyline tend to return for future concerts. Financial side is always a struggle. We try to keep ticket prices low so that most people can enjoy the concerts, and without an audience we simply cannot make it all work. Keeping the building heated and the lights on is always part of that equation as well. We’ve been very fortunate to have excellent support in our community for Skyline.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well, as a group, Skyline is known as a community resource that hosts a monthly (sort of monthly, we do have months that we do not schedule) concerts but is also known as a space that is available for private events-birthday celebrations, weddings, baby showers and things like that.
Musically we are known for looking for top level local and touring musicians that are well established professionals. Artist that are up and coming but extremely talented are always of interest too. We tend to find artists that are fiercely independent and original. Rarely do the artists we present perform covers-if they do they have their own interpretation of the cover song. We love original folk and country, roots rock, blues, bluegrass, Americana and rural vibey stuff that knocks your socks off. Excellent songwriting is a must as well as excellent musicianship. We appreciate music that moves your heart and sometimes your booty!!!
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
There is something about the cheer of an audience when the audience connects with the musician. When the audience roars and the musicians feel that enthusiasm and appreciation and the band just glows, they come to life in a way that only an appreciative audience and an awesome talent can when they connect. That feeling that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up and you get that shiver run down your spine just from the music or the lyrical passage-that is the stuff that is absolute magic. And sharing this with the community is what its all about.
