Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Campbell.
Hi Dan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Moe’s Hardware was established at 162 S. Maple St. in Grant, MI by Elmo ‘Moe’ Campbell in 1950. Adjoined to the hardware sat a house in which Moe & his family resided. Char Campbell (Vittone), Moe’s wife stated “As soon as the kids could walk, they were helping out at the hardware”.
Moe’s eldest son, David Campbell, sustained the hardware business when Moe retired in the 1980s. Dave carried on the family business for over 40 years, navigating through various industry twists & turns. In 2022, Dave decided to hang up his tools and retire from the hardware business after many decades.
Dave’s eldest son, Daniel Campbell took the reins of the family business and immediately conducted an extensive interior/exterior building remodel as well as modernization to the business practices. This endeavor took almost 6 months to complete the process. Rebranding & preserving his family’s legacy as Moe & Sons Hardware LLC, the rebooted business held its official grand re-opening on Friday, August 11th, 2023.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Post-covid reboot of a generational business was challenging in many ways as one can imagine. However, with our deep roots in the community along with our revised vision of the business we were able to make it happen. Although we may be a small business, having a limited amount of financial resources requires you to think outside the box. Therefore, by thinking outside the box we would lean on our creativity to meet challenges. One example would be foregoing traditional layout of the store to a completely custom layout that took advantage of every usable space available.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are 3rd generation family owned & operated hardware store that has been in business since 1950 in the same location. With over seven decades of business in retail hardware you can imagine the changes in the landscape many times over. But what sets us apart from others is our customers service. We are not just serving customers but our friends & family so we treat everyone like this. We are the last original family owned hardware store in Newaygo County Michigan.
