Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah DeJong.
Hi Sarah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Reflecting on where I started takes me all the way back to middle school, when I bought my first pair of clip-in hair extensions. I remember feeling envious of the girls who had long, thick, beautiful hair, and from that moment on, I never wanted to go without extensions. What started as curiosity quickly became a passion.
By high school, I began experimenting with different types of extensions, which eventually led me to halo extensions. When I entered cosmetology school, I started custom-making halos, blending creativity with technique. After graduating in 2018, I went straight into the salon environment and began building my brand around custom halo extensions, growing a loyal clientele during a time when the hair extension industry was rapidly expanding.
With time and dedication, I became increasingly interested in sew-in methods. I taught myself through hands-on practice and refinement, eventually mastering the technique I still use today. What stood out to me was how seamless, natural, and healthy the results could be. I realized this approach had the potential to elevate industry standards, which became the foundation of what is now Plush Hair Extensions.
In 2019, I was given the opportunity to open my own salon. At the time, I was young and still learning the business side of the industry, but I took the leap. I started with a small space and a few chair renters, which quickly evolved into a growing team of assistants and commission stylists. As my business expanded, I discovered a deep passion for mentorship—teaching and guiding other stylists became just as fulfilling as working behind the chair.
In 2025, I moved into a larger location, marking a major milestone in my journey. Today, I remain focused on continuing my education, expanding my hair extension brand, and leading a strong, supportive salon team. Above all, my goal is to create opportunities for other stylists while continuing to innovate and elevate the standard of hair extensions in the industry.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Has it been a smooth road? The short answer is no—but also yes. Along the way, I’ve faced many challenges and situations I had never experienced before, and learning how to navigate them wasn’t always easy. I’m incredibly grateful for the support of my friends and family, who have helped guide me through those moments.
Looking back, I truly believe everything happens for a reason. Even the hardest times have shaped me and brought me to where I am today. One thing I always remind myself is to keep going. No matter what comes my way, I allow myself to feel it, but I don’t stay down for long—I get back up and keep moving forward.
Owning a business is not easy. There are so many layers behind the scenes that people don’t see on social media, and I think that’s one of the most important things to understand. Success isn’t just what’s shown online—it’s built through persistence, resilience, and the willingness to push through even when things get tough.
