Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank Fiorello.
Hi Frank , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Getting into journalism wasn’t a corporate pivot; it was a personal one. It started with a simple “why not?” among friends. We realized we had perspectives that weren’t being represented and stories that were being left on the cutting room floor. We didn’t want to wait for permission to write, so we decided to build the platform ourselves.
Today, Detroit Rock City News (DRCN) is the result of that leap. We are a small team of friends with a shared goal: to write honestly, put it out there, and see what sticks. We aren’t interested in the polish of traditional media—we’re interested in the pulse of the story.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Right now, we are in the trenches. Like any new business, we’re facing the classic hurdle: how to keep the lights on while giving our stories the depth they deserve. We’re currently balancing the “9-to-5” with the “5-to-9,” working to bridge the gap so we can eventually dedicate ourselves entirely to the writing.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a writer driven by raw emotion rather than formal training. My specialty isn’t in academic journalism; it’s in capturing the energy of the room and the honesty of a story. I’ve spent most of my life on a “ride” that taught me more about people and grit than a classroom ever could. Now, I’m channeling that into building a media company that serves as the true pulse of the Great Lakes.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I push it to the limit and ride the edge.
