Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Samantha Chapel of Clarkston

Samantha Chapel shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Samantha, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Finding my love for creating for fun again! I used to draw, paint, crochet, build, make jewelry and found myself reaching for my phone for instant gratification and entertainment any time I was “bored” or free. It’s a work in progress and there’s some learning to be done about slowing down again.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an esthetician and makeup artist based out of Clarkston! I specialize in eyebrow shaping and laminations- my favorite service to do! I also offer bridal makeup and will soon be jumping back into that season. My whole goal as an esthetician and makeup artist is to make everyone feel their best about their natural beauty! I’m more of a natural to soft glam makeup artist and a natural “fit to you” kind of brow artist as well! Laminations are my absolute favorite because you can enhance someone’s natural brows by changing the shape into a more desired shape for each person! My most recent goals have been to do more facials and to get more people into an easy, hydrating skin care routine!

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
Two words- people pleasing. I’ve unfortunately gone my whole life people pleasing to ease my own mind when it comes to guessing what people are thinking. It’s exhausting and is going to be freeing to let go of.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
No one is mad at you, you’re allowed to have opinions, ideas, and interests!

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is definitely more reserved but the real me. I don’t tend to open up and show my full personality with the public, especially a large group, until I get to know someone! Once I feel comfortable with a group and can trust that I’ll be accepted, I show more of me and let that extroverted part of me actually come out.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely. I’ve never been one to thrive on praise or compliments in general, if anything it makes me uncomfortable and I’m working on it. Giving my best falls right into perfectionism which can be quite challenging when I see myself “fail”. I can be a little too hard on myself especially when it comes to success, my career, and my craft.
