Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivette Gerstenschlager.
Hi Ivette, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Ivette Gerstenschlager, and if you had told my 16-year-old self—growing up in East Germany as the Berlin Wall fell—that one day I’d build a life and business in Michigan, I probably wouldn’t have believed you.
Back then, the world felt small and distant. Travel seemed like a dream meant for other people. But life has a way of surprising you. In 1999, I took a leap of faith and came to the United States as an au pair, planning to stay for just a year. That “one year” turned into a lifetime.
Michigan is where everything changed. It’s where I met the man who would become my husband—the cutest guy I had ever seen—and 26 years later, we’re still here, still in love, and still calling Rochester home. Together, we’ve built a beautiful life and raised two amazing kids: our son Ben, now 16, and our daughter Mia, 19, who’s off at college pursuing her own dreams. And of course, our family wouldn’t be complete without Luna, our lovable dog who keeps things fun.
In 2007, I followed another dream and started my own photography business, Ivette Gersh Photography. What began as a passion has grown into a career I truly love. I specialize in capturing meaningful moments—high school seniors stepping into their future, families preserving their memories, professionals presenting their best selves, and events that deserve to be remembered forever. For me, photography isn’t just about pictures—it’s about telling stories, freezing moments in time, and helping people see themselves in the best light.
Outside of work, I’m someone who thrives on connection. I love traveling, spending time with friends, and bringing people together—whether it’s a casual get-together or a fun night out. I enjoy staying active, giving back through volunteering at school and in sports, and being part of the community that has given me so much.
Looking around today, I feel grateful. What started as a leap into the unknown turned into a life filled with love, purpose, and connection. From East Germany to Rochester, from uncertainty to building a business and a family—I’ve created a life that once felt impossible. And that’s something I never take for granted.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Pretty smooth, biggest obstacle was my family being so far away, especially as I had kids. It broke my heart seeing my mom suffer not being able to be a grandma she had dreamed off all her life.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I studied Graphic Design and worked in that field for 6 years- but after having kids I started my own Photography company. I specializing in a wide variety of photos like Family Portraits, Sports, Events, Seniors, Corporate photos. What mostly sets me apart is that love to be creative and try to think out of the box. I don’t want to deliver cookie cutter photos and I do whatever I can to achieve my goals. My proudest moment was when one of my photos was featured in a magazine.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Invest in education, also invest in business and marketing education. I only focused on Photography and managing the actual business side of it can be a struggle.
