Daily Inspiration: Meet Steven Dearing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Dearing.

Hi Steven, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started as a self-taught electric guitarist who received his first guitar for his 16th birthday. I decided I wanted to understand music after playing by ear so I entered music school after studying chemistry for 2 years.
Abha started singing with her dad, an Indian harmonium player at an early age and by age 5 was performing at festivals at Hart Plaza Detroit.
We met at Wayne State where Abha was finishing her undergraduate degree on a Liberace scholarship and Steven was a graduate student on a full scholarship

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We married, which meant we had to decide which country to live in; Abha is a US citizen and Steven is Canadian. Abha’s mom funded our first recording project, made in the Cleveland area by Bruce Gigax, a renowned engineer. We started to get international recognition and things started to take off with appearances on PBS and local radio stations

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We specialize in 2 areas; music for voice and guitar and music for flute and guitar works by 20th century composers. We have toured throughout the US, and the UK and parts of Canada. We have released 4 albums, all reviewed by critics in both the United States and Canada. We work locally as both sought after instructors in our areas of expertise and perform mostly locally these days. Steven has served as guest soloist with several orchestras too

How do you think about happiness?
Keeping classical music alive and thriving
Seeing a student progress
Performing with our life partners
Doing music and music only for a living
