Inspiring Conversations with Jim Makowski of Makowski Legal, PLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Makowski.

Hi Jim, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up in Southwest Detroit, I attended Holy Redeemer for both grade school and high school. To fund my undergraduate education at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, I worked as a home delivery driver for Sears. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1995 and went on to earn my Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in 1999.

I gained experience as a real estate litigator at one of the nation’s largest real estate law firms. Upon the recommendation of my mentor, Professor Patrick Keenan, I decided to focus my career on criminal defense and practiced criminal law under one of the leading defense attorneys in Michigan before establishing my own firm.

My primary practice areas are Self-Defense & Firearms Law, general Criminal Defense, Civil Rights Litigation, and general Civil Litigation, including personal injury, medical malpractice and real estate disputes. I have successfully argued cases at the appellate level, with a 7-0 victory in the Michigan Supreme Court, reversing a previous Court of Appeals decision.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I was raised by my grandmother. When I was 8 years old, my grandfather passed away and I assumed the role of “man of the house,” basically taking care of her and eventually turning down a full scholarship to UCLA rather than leave her on her own in an increasingly dangerous part of town. She never knew about the scholarship, because I knew she would insist that I go and leave her on her own.

So I made my own way. When I felt alone, I immersed myself in books. I worked full time to afford undergrad and attended classes part time. After graduation I excelled in sales, but I hated the cold calling. Seven months post graduation, I took the LSAT, applied to law school, and started classes in the span of 6 weeks.

Growing up in an economically disadvantaged area gives me a unique perspective on the world. I feel it easy to relate to my clients of any background.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I founded Makowski Legal in 2006, specializing in criminal defense with a special focus on self defense and firearms law. I serve as Corporate Counsel for Michigan Gun Owners, wrote the legal portion of United States Concealed Carry Association’s Michigan Concealed Pistol License Program, serve as lead counsel for USCCA’s Critical Response Team in Michigan.

I’m considered a subject matter expert in firearms and self defense law, and I am frequently consulted by other attorneys and judges regarding Michigan and Federal gun laws. I teach Continuing Legal Education (CLE) classes regarding firearms and self defense law to Michigan judges and attorneys.

I’m known for my tenacity, highly successful negotiations with prosecutors, and a high percentage of favorable outcomes (whether through negotiation or trial).

I care deeply about my clients. When they call me, they are usually facing the worst experience of their lives. Their stories are all unique, but our goal is to always walk them through a difficult time. There is nothing more rewarding to me than hearing the joy in a client’s voice when they realize they are getting their life back. I recently had a mother break down in tears when she learned her 18-year-old son would not be seeing any prison time for an unfortunate event that could have happened to any one of our kids.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Pursue your passion. It is always easier to network when you are genuinely interested in a subject.

Recognize that EVERYONE has something they can teach you. Leave the arrogance outside the door.
