Check Out Darryl Smith’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darryl Smith.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Funny Meeting,
Markus and I were a summer festival and he was taking some photos and I was there also taking some photos. He had this Canon camera bag then pulled out a Sony camera. I am a Canon shooter so I made a joke that he was ashamed of shooting Sony so he carried a Canon bag. That started a conversation and we exchanged number and that is how the friendship started.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
He was partnering with someone else for a studio and I also wanted to use some studio space for photos. That venture collapsed but we remained in contact and still wanted a space. We both continued to look around Lansing for a space and eventually we found a space. Actually we had looked at multiple spaces but one of us didn’t think it was the right space or right location or price. Finally we did find a space. Now the challenge to grow the business and create great memories for out clients.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I started with photography when I was in high school and purchased my first film camera saving money for a paper route. That should tell you how long ago it was. While in high school I learned how to develop film and print enlargements but only black and white. I took some photo classes as well. In college I worked for Eastern Michigan Yearbook developing film and continued to create photos. Life happened and I slowed down for many years. We planned a family trip overseas and I wanted a good camera and by this time digital cameras had evolved. I choose a camera and the love was there.
I am very proud of my family, street and event photography. Capturing that smile, unique look and essence of personality. I am known amongst friends as a very good landscape and people photographer.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I had a very good childhood with wonderful parents so I have been very blessed. A few of my favorite memories is learning how to ride a unicycle and then using it to deliver newspapers. During my senior year when I had my first camera I took 90% of the candid school photos that ended up in the yearbook.
