Today we’d like to introduce you to LaKeisha Dickerson.
Hi LaKeisha , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I decided to become a Notary Public in September 2020. We were still pretty fresh into the pandemic. I had taken a leave of absence from my property manager position, to home school my 4 children when the world shut down. Needed something to supplement my loss of income. A friend of mine had previously suggested that I would make a good notary during lunch one day. So I decided to look up the qualifications. To my surprise there were not many, a simple background check and I was good to go. From there I began to do my own research, enroll in cost efficient training courses and enrolled in you tube university of notary publics, lol. Found most of the do’s and don’ts on the state website. Got my background successfully verified by the National Notary Association. Everything else I learned from trial an error. Still, there is so much more I plan to learn. Becoming a notary public opened my eyes to a whole new industry where I could utilize my current skill set. I have been in property management for over 14 years. My job was all about verifying, acknowledging, organizing and witnessing for the most part. Now I am here still learning, growing and discovery new depths to myself and the notary business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Wooo! There has been one after another. Beginning with being hospitalized with covid, diagnosed with primary hyperaldosteronism (an endocrine disorder) Being a recovering people pleasing, self sabotaging, fear of my own success, actively building my confidence lady. In a house alone, with one girl and three boys whom all depend on me and me only for their every need and survival. Being a single mom of four struggles come and go. I have lost so much. I have been caring for my Papa since my Granny passed in 2009. Papa passed away December 21, 2025 and it felt like I lost my parents. Hell I was born into disadvantage, pain and struggle that of which I use to fuel my will to be the best version of myself. I refuse to allow the struggles and/or hard times in my life to shine brighter that my own light. I am grateful for every obstacle they made me resilient, resourceful, reliable and in tune with me, myself and all the personas or personalities in between. It took so long to complete the interview because doubt, and fear set in, then were attacked by grief. I am so proud that I pushed through.
