Community Highlights: Meet Kendall Braxton of Braxton Management

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendall Braxton.

Hi Kendall, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started Braxton Management in undergrad with no backing. I was working a job where I was overworked and discriminated against because of my age. I was harassed until I went into work the day I called in due to sickness. That same day a criminal defense attorney reached out asking if I was still seeking work. That was my last day at that job. I had previously babysat the attorney’s kids in the summer. I immediately texted him confirming I absolutely was. I met with him to discuss details, and he became the first client of what would become Braxton Management. When I set out, I vowed that I would never be an employer who makes employees hate their jobs. That is still a guiding post for me.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Ha! A smooth road? That is comical. I’m sure many entrepreneurs would agree. Being a young, Black woman starting out, some laughed at what I was building. Overcoming that was an early struggle. I had a big vision early on and I’m still seeing parts of it unfold. Lack of access to capital arose as a struggle. The biggest struggle that would come was conveying the story of what we do and who we serve to all stakeholders. Even though, I knew what I was offering and understood that offering and client personas evolve, I needed to truly learn how to articulate so that prospective clients, community members, and ambassadors could have a clear understanding of who we are, what we do, and who we serve.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Braxton Management has a mission to manage the unmanageable and make things make sense. We specialize in administration and operations management. Our dedication to relationship building and tailoring services to best help our clients fulfill their missions sets us apart from others. Most of our clients’ work has had direct impact on their communities. Being a community builder at heart, supporting impactful small businesses and nonprofits mean the world to me. I am most proud of the commitment to continually grow and better services, using every contract as an opportunity to further our expertise and learn.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
As a child, I was what some call bossy. I was decisive. I was a go-getter, active in extracurricular activities. I showed entrepreneurial spirit at a young age. I was always drawn to math, music, and writing, then culinary arts came along as a teen. I was funny and outspoken. Despite using meanness as a guard, I was dependable and a good friend.
