Hidden Gems: Meet Dr. Chris Hall of Outreach Optical formerly Dr. Chris E. Hall OD PC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Chris Hall.

Hi Dr. Chris, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Our story really begins long before Outreach Optical officially exists.

For decades, Dr. Chris Hall served the Flint community as an optometrist, but his work extended far beyond a traditional office. He regularly partnered with organizations like local missions, churches, and service groups traveling internationally to make sure people who could not afford care still received eye exams and glasses. Over time, we kept encountering the same problem — many outreach programs want to help, but the cost of eyewear is the barrier that stops them.

As Dr. Hall began planning for semi-retirement, we realized his experience, equipment, and relationships could solve that problem on a larger scale. Instead of closing a practice, we decided to transition it. Together, we are converting his office into Outreach Optical, a nonprofit optical lab designed to support other community programs by producing affordable glasses for the people they serve.

We have not opened yet — we are currently in the transition phase — but that is exactly where this story sits. Outreach Optical is the continuation of a lifetime of service, now structured to reach beyond one clinic and equip many organizations across Flint and eventually the state of Michigan.

Rather than one provider helping individuals one appointment at a time, we are building a system that helps helpers.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This has definitely not been a smooth road, but it has been a very intentional one. We hope to be fully operational and open to the public by Spring 2027. We continue to do what we can, and help where we can for now.

The idea for Outreach Optical actually began nearly ten years ago. During that time, I specifically pursued education focused on learning how to build and operate a nonprofit from the ground up so that when the opportunity came, we could do it responsibly and sustainably.

As we’ve worked to transition the practice, we’ve encountered the kinds of challenges that come with building something meant to last — navigating insurance systems, structuring how programs can access affordable eyewear, and preparing the building itself so it can operate at full capacity as a lab instead of a traditional clinic. Each step has required research, patience, and often redesigning our plans to better serve the community long-term.

Rather than discouraging us, those obstacles have confirmed the need for this model. We are not rushing to open quickly; we are building carefully so that when Outreach Optical launches, it can reliably support other organizations and remain sustainable for years to come.

As you know, we’re big fans of Outreach Optical formerly Dr. Chris E. Hall OD PC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Outreach Optical is a nonprofit optical lab designed to remove one of the biggest barriers in vision outreach — the cost and accessibility of glasses. We strive to offer all planned services by spring 2027.

Most programs that provide eye exams still struggle to place eyewear into the hands of the people they serve. Our role is to support those helpers. We produce affordable prescription glasses for shelters, clinics, schools, recovery programs, and community outreach organizations so they can complete the care they already work hard to provide.

As we transition away from a traditional patient model, we are also opening our doors to the public. Community members will be able to walk in and obtain affordable glasses directly, with a goal of same-day dispensing whenever possible. This allows individuals who may not qualify for assistance programs — but still cannot manage typical retail optical costs — to access practical solutions without long waits or high pricing.

What makes Outreach Optical different is that we are not competing with existing providers — we exist to equip them while also filling gaps in access. Instead of operating as a retail optical office, we function as a centralized service partner that allows multiple organizations to offer vision solutions without needing to build their own optical infrastructure.

Our specialization comes from decades of hands-on experience serving vulnerable populations. The systems we are building are shaped around real barriers people face — transportation limits, insurance gaps, replacement needs, and affordability. Every decision is designed for sustainability and dignity, both for the organizations we serve and the individuals receiving glasses.

Brand-wise, we are most proud that Outreach Optical is built as a continuation of a lifetime of service rather than a new venture created for opportunity. The goal is simple: make it easier for people who already help their communities to fully help them — and to give individuals a reliable place they can walk into and leave seeing clearly.

We want readers to understand that Outreach Optical is not just providing glasses — we are building a support system behind the scenes so that vision care can realistically reach more people, more consistently, and for the long term.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
We truly see Outreach Optical as the result of a community effort across generations.

The story began with Dr. Chris Hall’s father, Dr. Earl Hall, who graduated from the Northern Illinois College of Optometry in 1948 and moved to Flint to serve the vision needs of local GM workers. His commitment to practical, accessible care shaped not only a practice, but a mindset that service should always come first.

Over the years, the City of Flint and its residents have supported and trusted our family, allowing that work to continue for decades. We also owe a great deal to the many nonprofits, shelters, churches, and outreach programs who welcomed partnership and showed us firsthand where the real gaps in care exist. Their daily work with the community is what inspired the model Outreach Optical is built on.

Our faith in Jesus has also guided our direction — encouraging us to view this not simply as a business transition, but as a responsibility to use what we have been given to serve others well.

Outreach Optical may be our organization, but it was shaped by a city, a network of helpers, and a legacy that began long before we started building the lab.
