Meet Michael Ghareeb of Holland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Ghareeb.

Hi Michael, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I attended High School in Grand Rapids at Ottawa Hills High School where I participated in Football, Basketball, Baseball and Golf. I then graduated from Grand Valley State University with a bachelor’s degree in Special Education and Psychology. My career in education began in 1996 when I became an elementary school resource teacher. I taught for 5 years at both the elementary and middle school levels in the Grand Rapids Public Schools. During that time, I attained a Master’s Degree also From GVSU in Special Education Administration with Director’s Approval. In 2002, I accepted my first administrative position as a High School Assistant Principal and Athletic Director. In my 24 plus years as an administrator, I have also served as a Middle School Principal, an Elementary School Principal, a Special Education Director, and an Early Childhood Director. I am extremely excited to now be in the West Ottawa Public Schools serving as the principal at Lakewood Elementary where we nurture leaders who excel academically and socially by providing a caring and enriching environment.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With a seamless career journey spanning Pre-K through 12 education, I have had the privilege of serving students, staff, and families at every level—primarily in administrative roles. This comprehensive experience has provided a deep understanding of the instructional, social-emotional, and operational needs across all grade bands. From early childhood foundations to secondary preparation, my work has been guided by a commitment to student success, collaborative leadership, and continuous improvement. Serving in diverse educational settings has allowed me to build strong systems of support, foster positive school cultures, and lead with a whole-child perspective that connects learning from the earliest years through graduation.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My leadership in education is grounded in inspiring and empowering teachers to reach high levels of achievement while keeping student success at the center of every decision. I believe strong schools are built through collaboration, high expectations, and a shared commitment to continuous growth. By fostering a culture of trust, professional learning, and accountability, I have worked alongside staff to elevate instructional practices and outcomes. This collective effort has been recognized with two National Blue Ribbon Awards as a School of Excellence within the past six years—an honor that reflects the dedication of our educators and the strength of our school community.

What makes you happy?
I find true happiness through meaningful work that brings a deep sense of satisfaction, strong family ties that provide constant support and perspective, and lasting friendships that enrich everyday life. These connections form the foundation of both my personal and professional well-being. Alongside this, a lifelong love of golf has been a steady source of joy—offering balance, reflection, and a reminder of the value of patience, perseverance, and time spent outdoors. Together, these elements create a fulfilling life rooted in purpose, relationships, and passions that continue to inspire and energize me.
