Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Ales.
Hi Bryan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Performance Recovery Wellness was born after I spent 10+ years in the fitness industry seeing the wide range of approaches from various trainers, group workouts, bootcamp-style classes, etc. I began to notice a prevalence of injuries and burn-out, and worse, a lack of significant progress or improvement for most. Having struggled with fitness in my younger years, I sought out strategies that would work with my body, rather than trying to force my body into submission. After several years of studying and analyzing countless modalities in fitness, recovery, and wellness, I saw in my own life how impactful these things can be. I went to massage school for a license in bodywork and the pieces finally fell into place. Equipped with the tools and techniques I’d spent years learning, I was finally able to begin helping people understand their bodies in a new way; eliminating pains they once thought permanent and reaching goals they never thought possible.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Along the way our biggest challenge has been spreading awareness of what we do, and how much it can help people. While our background is similar to many in the health/ fitness industry, the way we apply our knowledge is a very new concept. The prevalence of “snackable” fitness has left many with an incomplete understanding of how our bodies work, and how to find relief from pain. When sharing what we do, people often respond with things like “I get a massage every month”, “I stretch all the time, more won’t help”, or “I work out with a trainer, and they make sure I’m doing everything safely.” While none of these are offensive statements, we then have to educate them on how our approach differs from traditional massage or the basic stretching that most people know, or even from the average workout.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
While many people in the fitness industry come from an athletic background, often the top of their sports in their prime, this concept originated from years of my athletic efforts seeming to go unrewarded. Where others excelled naturally, I had to fight for every ounce of progress. This led me to the realization that much of what we consider normal in our lives and our approach to health is not natural, and that the tools that work for some are not effective for everyone. Seeing countless others experience the challenges and roadblocks that I had experienced myself drove me to seek out another method. I began to recognize the body as a complete system, and learned to work in conjunction with its natural functions, rather than beating it into submission. We spent the following years compiling a targeted blend of conventional “fitness” modalities and a wide array of neuromuscular, fascial, and somatic therapies, as well as a bit of bio-hacking, in order to regulate the nervous system, improve posture, restore movement patterns, and help our clients live more.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk is a necessary part of life that helps us grow past what we thought possible. Throughout the process of building the business, there have been many “leaps of faith.” From leaving my last job working for someone else, to moving into our first official office, to expanding to our current facility; each step has required me to stretch my comfort zone and push past my self-imposed limits.
