Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Crombez.
Hi Emily, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started photography thanks to a dear friend of mine, Alex of Alexandria Blake Photography. Back when we were in college, we met each other through some fashion focused student events. Once we connected, we started spending more and more time together. I learned about fashion photography with her, and I developed a love for photography that had been growing since I was a child.
As I graduated college in 2019, I found myself connecting with local Detroit creatives, learning more about the creative community, and beginning my photography business. Of course, not long after, the COVID pandemic started in 2020. It was a strange time for everyone, and a catalyst for my growth. While stuck at home, I dove into learning about retouching techniques and studio lighting to improve my photography.
Today, I’m overjoyed with the variety of clients I have – primarily couples who are getting married, but also businesses and individuals looking to document their growth and big moments.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Outside of COVID, I have had a relatively easy experience. Of course, learning and growing is a process that never ends. I’m happy to be continually expanding my skills & experiences.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m known primarily for my specific style of wedding photography now, but when I first connected with the creative scene in Detroit, I did fashion and creative portraits. Those early portrait sessions fueled my development of style and technique, and a lot of those fashion forward, narrative building aspects from those creative sessions have grown over into my wedding and event photography.
My editing style speaks to a history of being inspired by the nostalgia of film photography. Natural tones to keep things authentic and grounded, excellent lighting to bring a little bit of drama, and plenty of love in every photo for memories you’ll want to relive again and again.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I don’t know if people realize that I travel as much as I do for work! I’ve captured wedding portraits in Iceland, Mexico, and hopefully soon more of Europe. I’ve done weddings on each coast of the US – one in California, one in Rhode Island – and several in between.
