Inspiring Conversations with Moss Lee of Earth To Moss

Today we’d like to introduce you to Moss Lee.

Hi Moss, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Moss Lee (they/them) was born August 6th 2000, in small town Michigan. As a queer transgender artist they have found home and community in Grand Rapids.

“Earth To Moss” was created by fashion designer Moss Lee in January 2023. Their focus is sustainability in fiber arts, creating unique garments out of repurposed yarn. Moss follows an intuitive process, taking inspiration from the colors and textures of the yarn, making each creation genuinely one of a kind. Their designs are an expressive take on the traditional fiber art that has yet been able to be replicated by anything other than one’s hands.

As a child I would sew, staple and tape together scraps of fabric to create clothes for my dolls and stuffed animals. Designing dresses on a my Barbie sketch paper on my bedroom floor was my favorite pastime when I wasnt cutting out teen vouge magazine articles to tape onto my ceiling and walls. To be a designer has always been my dream but not one I was brave enough to purse until a couple years ago. Since then I have been in multiple fashion shows around the state of Michigan and have been featured in multiple magazines including one focusing on trans artists like myself that has been featured country wide. As a trans and queer individual I want everyone to boldly express themselves and hope they see my clothes as a tool to do so. Community means everything to me, not just the LGBTQIA+ community but people as a whole. Anyone can fit into my designs as I make them with the intention to fit multiple body types. Crochet is a thoughtful and considerate material to the human form no matter what shape or size a person comes in. It will fit smoothly when it’s called for as well as comfortably stretch when needed as well. When I dream of what my future holds as a designer I dream of styling musicians of any music style and variation. Nothing makes me happier than seeing something I created with love and attention being worn by someone expressing their art form on a stage, connection people through more art.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Earth To Moss?
Earth To Moss is unique from other fashion brands as the designer Moss Lee focuses on avant garde fashion utilizing sustainably sourced yarn. Lee takes a traditional fiber art practice and puts their own spin on it creating one of one garments that are intuitively made. Lee does not follow patterns but instead follows the flow of the garment they create in the moment and decides where the next stitch will go individually for the entire project. Due to the nature of acquiring yarn by thrift stores or being gifted forgotten half done projects by individuals, Moss works with yarn that can not be bought again if they run out of a certain shade or texture. Working with what they have and a questionable design process, every piece created cannot be made again.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
In general I have always pushed myself to be the absolute best I can be. This has been as a person, as an artist, as a partner, anything I do or am involved in. I am learning how to be patient with myself and my journey of being a designer. 2025 has been an incredible journey full of first experiences for me. The rapid pace of my artistic path this year has been something I am eternally grateful for but it has also made it difficult for me to be present in the moment to truly embrace and recognize what I have achieved. I am always thinking about what I can do better next time or what the next deadline is for a project. Learning to let myself be in the moment and be proud of myself for what I’ve already accomplished has been tricky as someone who always feels like they can improve.
