Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Jared Woods of Detroit

Jared Woods shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Jared, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
The thing I’m most proud of building is probably my character development. The things the world can’t see. It’s a gift and a curse. On the positive side, this has opened doors for me in my career, and granted acceptance to work proposals. On the flip side, I might get judged a certain way or get discredited for shortcomings, whole time they don’t know about the countless hours I’ve put in for them to even see me get this far. So I’m extremely proud of building the new character development I’ve established.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jared Woods, I’m an innovational artist born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Im a natural born artist, of many talents leaning towards the likings of them all! I’ve been creating for as long as I can remember. Throughout high school and some college, I learned techniques and styles that I continue to perfect as I pursue my professional career. My art is for the people seeking the confidence they’ve withheld due to fear of failure. My art is for the desires of those who want to fulfill their promises sent from heaven. Through my work, I tend to touch people on the fringes of society. My work is meant to uplift and encourage them.
The touch of a pen. The feel of a new paint brush! My work highlights anatomy through drawing faces, characters and human bodies. I try not to marginalize myself as one specific artist. Colors.Mixed Media today, glass tomorrow. Painting on canvas today, Resin/epoxy on wood tomorrow.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was Jared Woods, before I told the world who I was! Imagine letting someone else—i.e. the world—who are millions of humans you don’t know, tell you who you’re supposed to be? Then you wouldn’t be who you are, you would only be who the world is telling you you’re supposed to be. My name is Jared Woods and it’s my job to introduce myself to the world. it’s been times where I may have introduced myself to the world as something else, or I might have had to reinvent myself. There were even times when I was something I didn’t want to be, but I still show up as Jared Woods everytime.

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No! The feeling of being unheard goes a long way before & after my time and this is what I think drives creativity. Isolation is key when it comes to getting to the top, I understand and I’m stepping up to the plate everytime, executing. From family to closest peers, someone truly listening? No. Nowadays, I still have a difficult time accepting it, but I’ve accepted it, if that makes sense.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, there is no faking it over here. But I would say a certain percentage is in the public eye. And I feel like that goes for us all. We all have a private side or a home version of ourselves that isn’t put in the public. It’s certain things I may have done in the pass that aren’t aligned with the man I am today. So some public versions aren’t the real me, if being judged off the past. But nowadays, yes, I hold my head high, I raise the value of every room I’m in and display professionalism, publicly and privately.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I think people will misunderstand my confidence for cockiness. You see, I believe, so don’t let my confidence offend your insecurities. I’ve had a blessed life. So I’m humbled. But others may not have been as blessed and may take my confidence as overboard. But they just have small thoughts and marginalize their thoughts. My legacy isn’t finished, it’s only the end of the 1st quarter we got some time to define my legacy so maybe I won’t be misunderstood after all. But if so, as expected! They hated on Jesus, I’m His son of course I’m most hated.
