Story & Lesson Highlights with Ms Gina Gott of West Michigan

We recently had the chance to connect with Ms Gina Gott and have shared our conversation below.

Gina, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I’m a practicing witch and my business is very witchcraft heavy, so some people say some pretty stereotypical things. “That’s satanic “, “Magic isn’t real”, or “God’s judging you”. I try to dispel those myths if they are open to a conversation but some just can’t let others be happy if they believe differently. To them I just say, OK. Next person I can help you” and go about my day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Gina Gott and I am the creative and chaotic creator of Twisted Ginger Jewelry out of west Michigan. I’ve been creating and selling jewelry for 20 years and look forward to many more. I make jewelry that ranges from fun and dark to mildly unsettling that I describe as witchy, whimsygoth and educational.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was trying desperately, and failing, to be what my parents thought I should be. I didn’t fit in, did not excel in school or sports and didn’t dress to fit trends. But the 80’s were all about fitting in, so i tried like so many. Today I thrive in my organized disorganization and dress to please myself. Life is beautiful when you find your hidden path.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Be brave. Be confident. Be strong willed. Don’t let others make you feel small. Don’t let others tell you who you are. And mostly change is good. Change is scary and change will happen, often. And that’s OK.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
With my business focused on witchcraft, what they lean toward purchasing changes and shifts but fad wouldn’t be the right word because everyone practices differently. The economy is really the biggest foundational shifter I’ve found.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. How do you know when you’re out of your depth?
Usually when I’ve jumped in head first, lol! I’ve pushed myself to dig into research before I do most things but every now and then I say to myself ” how hard can it be?” But then again, who doesn’t.
