Conversations with Carita Miller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carita Miller.

Hi Carita, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Carita Miller (pronounced Car-Rita), and my journey in entertainment began long before I ever stepped into the business side of music. I grew up surrounded by creativity and storytelling, which naturally led me into dance and television at a young age. I appeared on a local Detroit TV show, which sparked my love for performance and culture. That early exposure to the entertainment world—and watching my mother, Montez Miller, work as a producer at BET—planted the seed for everything I do today.

My first real industry experience came when I interned at WJLB, Detroit’s top urban radio station. Around that same time, I was offered a paid position outside the industry, and as a new mom, I took it for stability. It was a hard decision—I stepped away from the path I was on—but I never lost sight of my dream. That detour gave me the resilience and perspective I needed to come back stronger, more determined, and with a deeper purpose.

Over the last five years, I’ve built a career that blends creativity with strategy. I now work as an Independent Music Supervisor, Artist Manager, Talent Agent with Breakpoint Booking, and Music Editor at Beautiful Machine Magazine. I also lead music initiatives at Mainstreem Media, an entertainment platform designed to connect diverse creators and audiences. Through my companies—The Lady With the Golden Ear and CM2 Entertainment—I’ve supervised music for over 15 films, managed emerging R&B and hip-hop artists, and curated live events that celebrate Detroit’s culture.

Along the way, I’ve become a Recording Academy Voting Member (Class of 2024) and an active member of several professional organizations including the Guild of Music Supervisors, Women in Music, Women in Film, She Is The Music, and the California Copyright Conference. I’m also pursuing my Music Business degree at Berklee College of Music Online, maintaining a 3.9 GPA while balancing motherhood, management, and multiple creative roles.

Everything I do now is rooted in purpose—to help artists build sustainable careers, to bridge creativity with business, and to leave a legacy that shows it’s possible to build your own lane in this industry with faith, integrity, and consistency.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. My journey has had a lot of twists, pauses, and moments where I had to choose responsibility over passion. One of the biggest turning points was when I became a mom while interning at WJLB, Detroit’s top urban radio station. The internship was unpaid, and I was offered a paying job in customer service. As a new mother, I took the stable option—even though it meant stepping away from the path I truly wanted. I’ve always felt that if I had stayed, my music career would have accelerated a lot sooner. That moment was one of the first times I felt like I might have to give up my dream of working in the industry.

There were also the challenges of starting over later, rebuilding my network, and figuring out how to break into spaces that aren’t always easy for women—especially Black women—to access. Juggling motherhood, school, full-time work, and building multiple businesses wasn’t easy either. There were times when the workload, the lack of resources, or the uncertainty made me question if I was doing the right thing.

But every challenge shaped me. Those struggles forced me to get creative, stay grounded in faith, and build a work ethic that I’m proud of today. They pushed me to become more intentional, more resilient, and more determined to create opportunities not just for myself, but for the artists and communities I represent.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work lives at the intersection of creativity, strategy, and true artist support. Beyond the various roles I hold, what I actually do is help artists turn vision into reality. I focus on bringing structure, clarity, and long-term thinking to creative careers — making sure the people I work with aren’t just creating, but growing.

I specialize in connecting opportunities with intention. Whether it’s identifying music that elevates a scene, guiding an artist through a pivotal career moment, or spotting potential where others might not, I’m drawn to the deeper “why” behind the work. People often come to me for my ear and my strategic mind, but what I’m most proud of is the way I show up — consistently, thoughtfully, and with purpose.

What truly sets me apart is my passion to see artists win — whatever “winning” means for them. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all version of success. I believe in helping artists define their own path and supporting them with the integrity, honesty, and care that this industry sometimes lacks. I approach every project with the mindset of protecting the art, respecting the artist, and making sure the business side matches the excellence of the creative.

Integrity is the foundation of everything I do. I’m committed to leading with transparency, fairness, and respect — and I never compromise those values for an opportunity. That commitment has shaped my relationships, my work ethic, and the trust people place in me.

At my core, I’m someone who believes in building community, championing independent voices, and creating space for artists to grow on their own terms. And that’s the work I’m proud to stand behind.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
People can work with me in a few different ways depending on what they’re looking to build or create. I’m always open to collaborating with artists, filmmakers, producers, brands, and fellow industry professionals who lead with integrity and are passionate about meaningful work.

For artists, I offer support through music supervision, artist development, management consulting, and talent booking. Whether you need help getting your music placed, tightening up your business structure, preparing for a release, or navigating opportunities, I love being part of the process and helping artists grow on their own terms.

For filmmakers and content creators, I can assist with music sourcing, licensing, and creative direction for projects of all sizes. I also enjoy connecting with people who are building new platforms or thinking creatively about how music and storytelling can work together.

People can support me simply by sharing my work, referring artists or creatives who may need guidance, or inviting me into rooms where my skill set can make an impact. Collaboration is a huge part of my success, and I appreciate every person who believes in what I’m building.

At the end of the day, I’m most interested in working with people who value authenticity, purpose, and community — because that’s the foundation of everything I do.
