Hi Dymond, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hello everyone I am Dymond Brown widely known as “Dymond Love Nails”. I have been a licensed nail technician for 8 years, and a licensed nail instructor for 3 years. I own two of the #1 nail salons in Lansing, MI called “Onyx Nail Company” (2021). I host nail classes and entrepreneurial events, and I mentor beauty professionals especially nail technicians on how to successfully open and operate a salon business. I also mentor beauty professionals on how to make money without touching clients with digital products. I fell in love with nails throughout my teenage years growing up. I was at the nail salon every two weeks like clock work. When I would ask the techs that did my nails how do I become licensed they would give me no information, as if they were gatekeeping. So I took it upon myself to do the research to find a nail school nearby so I could become a licensed nail technician. Been in the game every since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing in life is easy so of course you will have some bumps in the road. I will say this of course I’ve had some struggles, such as no employees, utility bills being close to $1,000.00 each, salon flooding, a salon break in, I could keep going. But to me struggles are lessons and I like to think of the things I did to overcome those struggles instead of focusing on the struggles.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The art of doing nails I must admit is unique. It looks really easy but it’s actually a really hard skill to accomplish. Doing acrylic nails takes lots of practice. I myself specialize in my acrylic foundation, meaning the foundation of my acrylic full sets are top tier. My nails last on my client for 4-6 weeks, unless you are one of my clients that is a heavy lifter. Of course I may see my heavy lifting Clients twice a month or every 3 weeks. My heavy lifting clients means my clients are rough on their nails or they have oily skin which causes their nails to lift OR pop off more often than others.
For nail art my bling nails are my favorite and last longer than most nail technicians.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Honestly as an entrepreneur this lifestyle is all about risk taking. How will you know if a new technique or marketing skill works if you don’t take a risk? I honestly feel if you’re not a risk taker you are scared of growth. Entrepreneurship is all about growth, so why not take the risk ?
