Meet Scotty Johnson of Stomping Grounds Training & Recovery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scotty Johnson.

Hi Scotty, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in south Florida. I grew up playing hockey (yes I know huge shocker for Florida). I played two years of junior A hockey in Connecticut before returning home and going to the University of Miami. They had an amazing Exercise Physiology program where I ended up getting my Bachelors and Masters in Exercise Physiology with a concentration in Strength and Conditioning. After graduation I opened up a gym in Miami with two other classmates. After Covid my wife Joelle and myself decided to move to Michigan. I opened up Stomping Grounds without knowing anyone up here and it was a huge stretch but I knew this was my passion to get a gym up and running here. Fast forward we have been opened for 3 and a half years and I couldn’t be happier.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t believe anything if life is a smooth road. It’s always very hard to start a business, it sounds glamorous at first until you realize that it requires 14 hours days 5 days a week and you don’t get weekends off.

The old saying is if you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life. While that isn’t true there are plenty of days of “work” but I truly love what I do and the clients make it easy to keep coming back!

We’ve been impressed with Stomping Grounds Training & Recovery, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Stomping grounds is a small boutique gym in royal oak where we specialize in personal training and small group training classes.

Our approach is simple, be welcoming, have fun, and get clients results.

My background is in training athletes so I take the same approach with their program and scale it for the general population. It’s a lot of fun training professional athletes however it’s not always easy with their schedule, so we train the other 99% the same way.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I think the most “surprising “ thing about myself is that I really enjoy being an introvert at home. Coaching all day you have to be on at all times. The 6am class should get the same energy as the noon class and the same goes for the 7pm class.

At home I love to just relax and hang out with my wife Joelle and our son Liam. Liam is almost two so there isn’t much “relaxing”

Pricing:

  • Personal Training ranges from $70-$90 per session
  • Group training is $200 a month for unlimited training
  • We don’t have contracts or any cancellation fees
  • We are on Class Pass!
